LA VERNE, Calif. --- Biola had a well-rounded attack on Saturday at the La Verne Winter Invite. Day two of competition saw points coming in from many different places amongst the Biola roster but one area stood out. Both the men's and women's teams capitalized on the 100yd breaststroke event to bring in points for the three-day meet.

The BU men's squad moved up one rung on Saturday, sliding into third place on the leaderboard. The team finished the day with 858 points, while the women stayed pat in fourth place with a total of 607.5 points. The BU women did maintain their position ahead of Azusa Pacific, who rests one spot behind BU.

Event number 19 saw the 100yd breaststroke for the women competitors. Anna Haaksma took on the task for Biola, grabbing a finals appearance with a 1:06.42 time in prelims. The senior came out of the gates slower than the field with the worst first 50 in the finals group but turned on the jets to finish strong. The second split ranked fifth in the group as Haaksma nabbed seventh in the finals with a time of 1:07.07.

On the men's side, points came flooding in with three Eagles making the finals in the 100yd breaststroke. All three BU swimmers posted sub-one minute times in their prelims to make the final cut of eight competitors.

Jacob Haaksma was the first Eagle to finish at 58.30 for fourth place. Noah Benson nabbed sixth with a time of 59.50, despite trailing the field at the turn. James Gamette followed Benson in seventh at 1:00.15.

One of the final events of the day sparked excitement, as the men's 800 freestyle relay put some thrill in their finish. The Eagles were in a battle for second place in the event with Simon Fraser's B squad. BU trailed by over five seconds going into the final swimmer and the last 200 yards.

Tanner Smith entered the pool and eradicated the gap. Smith put together the third-best individual split in the event, and gradually overtook the opposition. By the final 50 yards, Smith was still behind by just over one second but he would not be denied. The senior caught his opponent and led the Eagles to second place by .07 seconds.

His 200 yard split in the event came out to 1:40.90. Jacob Haaksma led off the relay for BU and was followed by Alex Ness and Sean Rho, before Smith capped it off for a 6:54.31 finish.

Smith's split in the relay beat his finals time in the 200yd freestyle event on Saturday. The silver medal belonged to Smith in the event, who clocked a time of 1:41.21 and was second place through each split. Ness logged an eighth place finish in the individual event with a time of 1:49.05.

BU also saw finalists in the 400yd individual medley for the men's and women's teams. Colette Friedley did well to make the finals and then go on to cut three seconds off her prelim time to finish sixth at 4:35.55. For the men, Rho tacked on a fifth place finish with a mark of 4:11.35.

BU swim and dive will complete the La Verne Winter Invite on Sunday with preliminary events beginning at 10:00 am and finals at 5:00 pm.
