Biola Eagles earn victories all around in Saturday's double dual.

October 15, 2022

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Swim & Dive made a triumphant return to Lansing Pool on Saturday as Head Coach Nathan Harding's bunch went toe-to-toe with Fresno Pacific and The Master's University in one of two home meets for its 2022-23 season.

This meet was set up as a double dual meet as the three teams competed head-to-head for dual points and wins. The Eagles were the most successful program on the day, winning both head-to-head matchups for both men's and women's swim & dive.

The men's team had an average margin of victory of about 40 points in its two duals, helped out by a massive 123-60 win over The Master's University. The Eagle me also set down Fresno Pacific in a much closer dual, 102-84.

On the women's side the team results were even wider. BU topped 120 in each of its duals as it set down TMU 129-58 and FPU 129-51.

Each gender participated in 13 events, including two relays, one diving event and eight individual swims. It was a nice mix as the distance swimmers had the 1,000-freestyle and 500-freestyle and there were also IMs available as well as the 100s of each stroke.

Biola earned the top spot in three of the four relay events, with the only exception being a second-place mark in the men's 200-medley relay. That was nearly a photo finish as FPU out-touched the Eagles 1:36.53 to 1:36.66.

The women's 400-freestyle relay was especially dominant for BU as Harding's team finished both first and second with its 'A' and 'B' efforts. There was a 16-second gap between Biola's top team and an outside top team in the final event of the day. BU's group of Sofia Chavez-Varela, Mirsha Lora, Liza Parahnevich and Kolya Vos went 3:40.71 to rock FPU's fourth-place side, which tallied a 3:56.92.

Just before the day wrapped up with the successful 400-freestyle relays, it was a Haaksma sweep for Biola in the 100-breaststroke. First, Anna Haaksma won by nearly two seconds with a 1:08.42. That was followed by younger brother Jacob Haaksma picking up a win in the men's race with a :59.31.

Those were two of Biola's 11 individual event wins on Saturday. That number grows to 13 when you add in Abby DePina (222.95) and Caleb Pook's (242.25) victorious efforts in the 1-meter diving events.

Other highlights include first-year swimmers Mirsha Lora (10:55.36) and Sean Rho (10:05.26) both earning convincing victories in the 1,000-freestyle and three Eagles going back-to-back-to-back at the top of the women's 50-freestyle and also the 400-IM.

Liza Parahnevich, Anna Cohee and Jackie Mudd led that effort in the 400-IM. Parahnevich's top mark in this instance of that event was a 4:40.92 and was a 10-second gap to second place.

Up next for Biola is a dual meet at Occidental College next Saturday.
