Eagles End Drought

Biola picked up its first win against Point Loma on Saturday since the 1985 campaign.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The BU women's tennis team played host to the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday afternoon. Biola was the team to find the edge, taking the match by a 4-2 final margin.

From start to finish, the Eagles fought through tough matchups to pull out the victory. "To play with so much heart and be able to execute feels great and I'm just so proud of the team," stated head coach David Goodman.

Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia put the Eagles ahead quickly, landing a 6-2 set from the No. 1 spot. The BU duo notched its ninth win of the season, boasting a 9-3 record in 2021.

The next two doubles contests went the distance, resulting in a pair of 7-6 scorelines. Point Loma narrowly grabbed the win in the third flight, making the second court decide the doubles point.

Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeill carried the pressure with all eyes on them. The tandem forced a 6-6 tie before taking the win by way of a tiebreaker.

Singles play evolved into a back-and-forth affair in the second half of the match. Through four contests, neither team gained separation at two each, which made the score on the day 3-2.

With the match hanging in balance, Lilly McNeill was deadlocked with Rachel Whittington at one set apiece. McNeill continued to build confidence throughout the competition, winning the final set 6-2 to seal the victory for BU, 4-2.

"Lilly's got ice in her veins. She just seems to come through for us all year in the big match situations," said Goodman about the freshman standout. McNeill seemed to get better as the match progressed, as she grabbed the final two sets after dropping the first.

Emery and Brascia also scored singles wins on the afternoon. Brascia extended her incredible winning streak to 11-consecutive singles matches with Saturday's straight-sets triumph.

The 12-3 Eagles will return to action in a road contest against Concordia on Friday.
