Eagles Wrap Up Season Opener with Win

Biola softball found its offense in game two of Friday’s doubleheader, defeating HIU by a 6-2 final score.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's Friday afternoon doubleheader came to a close with a 6-2 game two victory over Hope International (7-1). The BU offense came alive, overcoming a 2-0 first inning deficit to nab its first win of the season.

"Coming out into the second game, I just told them to be more aggressive and I think that their swings looked a lot better, we were hitting balls hard up the middle and attacking good pitches", commented head coach Nikki Udria.

BU showed that aggressive posture at the plate early in the contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Ruth Munoz batted leadoff for the Eagles and began the rally with a double. Kylie Velasco notched the first RBI, laying down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Munoz. Jennifer Morinishi touched home for Biola's second run, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Bri Nowak.

An error plagued third inning from the Royals helped the Eagles claim their first lead of the game. Back-to-back fielding mistakes placed Munoz on third base, leading to a sacrifice fly from Kayla Neff to give Biola a 3-2 advantage.

Raylene Roybal nabbed the start and the win from the circle. The freshman righty settled in after giving up a pair of runs in the first inning, tossing three-straight scoreless frames to close the outing.

Entering in relief, Morinishi was nearly perfect through a three-inning effort, needing just 38 pitches for nine outs. The lefty hurler refused to allow a run or hit, while collecting four strikeouts and the save.

"Jennifer did phenomenal. She's just really finding her groove and finding her role on the team," added Udria. "Coming from the outfield, hitting and into the pitching mound, she's been able to balance the three."

The BU lineup added to the team's lead in their last two chances at-bat, adding three runs between the fifth and sixth innings. In the contest, BU boasted a .363 batting average with runners in scoring position, helping the squad to the 6-2 victory.

Morinishi, Munoz and Neff all logged multi-hit efforts in game two. Morinishi tallied a single in her first three plate appearances for a three-hit outing. Neff recorded a pair of hits, while tying for the team-high of two RBI.

Biola improved to 1-1 on the season with the win and will now look toward its Saturday doubleheader against Azusa Pacific. The two teams will kick off PacWest play at 12:00 pm at Freedom Field.
