BU Drops Another D1 Opponent

Biola Women's Swim & Dive hands Cal Poly a head-to-head defeat.

February 28, 2021

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- On Saturday in San Luis Obispo Biola Swim & Dive earned its seventh dual meet victory of the season as the women's side dismissed the NCAA Division I Mustangs to the tune of a 151-144 team score.

The win was big, but Biola also saw two record-setting individual swims and one swimmer break into the top-5 in her event in terms of NCAA Division II times. On the men's side, Patrick Waggoner was responsible for one of the Eagles' new school records as the Eagles battled hard, but came up short with a final score of 193-100.

The top time came from Grace Kling, who led a group of women's breaststrokers who had a major impact on the outcome of this closely-contested meet. Kling's 2:15.75 in the 200-breaststroke won her the event, set a school record and makes her a near lock to be invited to compete at the NCAA Division II national championships.

It was not her alone that helped BU score major points in the breaststroke, though. In the 200-breaststroke, she was followed by Anna Haaksma, giving BU 13 points in the event.

In the shorter breaststroke event Kling was once again the victor, logging a time of 1:03.73. This time, Biola took first, second and third in the race to lock up 16 of the 19 available points. Joining Kling was Meghan Tolman and Haaksma.

In those two events, Biola had a +23 points differential over the hosting Mustangs. This went a long way to help Biola's eventual +7 advantage at the end of the day.

Biola won the women's 200-medley relay and finished just four-tenths of a second back in the women's 400-freestyle relay in a strong team showing. Kayln Chang, Tolman, Katelyn Harper and Kolya Vos went 1:46.74 to get Biola a near-two second win in the leadoff relay.

Waggoner's record-setting swim for the men came pretty early in the day as he finished second in the eighth event (400-IM) with a new Biola best time of 4:07.59.

Rewinding back to the beginning of the day, Audrey Vermeulen picked up the first individual event win for any Eagle. She took the crown in the women's 1,650-freestyle by carding a new career-best time of 18:17.30. She, Kellynn Hayes and Kristina Arcerito went 1-2-3 in the event.

Kolya Vos also picked up a win when she logged a :52.31 to win the 100-freestyle. Vos accomplished identical accolades a bit later on in the 200-free as she logged a top time with a 1:54.75.

The Eagles' women took all three of the short freestyle events with standout freshman Meghan Tolman claiming another 50-freestyle title. She swam a :24.12, which is a new personal-best. It's her fifth event win of her freshman campaign.

The men's team closed out the meet on a high note as they won the 400-freestyle relay in grand fashion with Tanner Smith, Jonas Huckabay, Jake Michelsen and Waggoner combining for a 3:06.70 to win by nearly four seconds.

Nex up for Head Coach Ryan Kauth's Eagles is a dual meet at Pepperdine (March 13) to serve as one last tune-up for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.
