Getting Settled

Some great showings from the freshmen mix with wins from returners on Saturday.

October 23, 2021

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Swim & Dive launched into dual meet season with a head-to-head battle with rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday morning in Azusa. The Cougars got the best of the Eagles in this go-around, taking the meet by a final tally of 143-98.

The two teams swam for just over two hours as they worked their way through a meet schedule featuring nine individual events and a pair of relays.

The rivals split the relays with Biola beginning the meet with a big win and the Cougars concluding the swimming by earning the top mark. Liza Parahnevich, Grace Kling, Morgan Kampfer and Kolya Vos teamed up to hit the wall at 4:02.19 to take the win in the medley relay. It was a three-second win over the Cougars and Biola managed two of the top-3 relay spots.

Biola's depth was also evident even in the relay they didn't win in. The Eagles once again took two of the top-3 spots later on in the 400-freestyle relay. Biola's 'A' group finished second with a 3:50.76 with the 'B' group just behind them at 3:53.20.

Familiar faces picked up individual event wins for the Eagles as Vos, Parahnevich and Kling all won one of the event to help add 27 points to the Biola team tally.

"This was another strong performance from our ladies to set ourselves up for competition next weekend," said Head Coach Nate Harding. "The ladies are definitely getting stronger as the season goes on. Our coaching staff is really excited with where the ladies are."

Vos went :24.71 to cruise to victory in the 50-freestyle while improving her time from the season-opener. Katie Ottman placed third in that race (:25.09) to make it two-for-three once more for BU.

Parahnevich obliterated the competition in the 200-backstroke, using a three-second gap over second place in her winning effort. Her 2:10.59 helped her to a major advantage over APU's Marci Yanagawa.

Kling's victory was in the final individual event of the morning, the 200-breaststroke. The sophomore had the narrowest margin of victory (yes, even less than in the 50-free) by edging APU's Amanda Anderson by just 13-hundredths of a second. She finished the race in 2:22.80, which was an eight-second improvement from her result in the event up at Pepperdine. That time is tops in the PCSC and a top-15 time among all NCAA Division II swimmers.

Other top finishes came from Morgan Kampfer in the 500-freestyle (3rd - 5:22.09) and 400-IM (3rd - 4:47.04), Vos (:54.25) and Kasidee Pascoe (:55.44) who went second and third in the 100-freestyle, and freshman Sofia Chavez-Varela who logged two second-place efforts.

Chavez-Varela went second in the 200-freestyle (2:00.95) to finish just ahead of Pascoe's third-place swim (2:03.76). She repeated that second-place effort in the 200-butterfly (2:13.20), finishing just ahead of teammates Parahnevich (2:13.31) and Anna Cohee (2:14.94).

Diving made a difference in the final team scores as the Cougars outscored the Eagles 32-4, mostly due to an advantage in roster size. Despite being outnumbered, Eliana Cote held things down well for BU. The sophomore recorded a 205.73 in the one-meter board and 166.43 on the high one.

Things were ultra-competitive throughout the swimming, with APU only having a 111-94 advantage there.

The men are back next week as both teams head up north for the Slug Shootout at UC Santa Cruz Friday and Saturday.
