A Feel-Good Result

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Head Coach David Goodman and Biola Women's Tennis felt relief come in following Friday's match against Lewis & Clark (OR). After dropping a match earlier in the week the Eagles felt they should have won, BLT played solid tennis against the Pioneers and clinched its first home victory of the year by a score of 4-0.

The visiting Pioneers had their share of good stretches throughout the day and tested Biola at several points, beginning with doubles play that was back-and-forth through the first three changeovers. But all three of Biola's lines rattled off a few games in a row midway through their respective sets and grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.

The tandem of Lily Waterhouse and Faith Grisham finished first with a 6-2 win that was sealed by breaking their opponents serve for the third time in the set. Lauren Lee and Ines Diaz finished less than five minutes later with the same result. And the No. 1 pair of Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager came back from being broken to open up their set to being within a game of a win of their own at 5-3.

Then the Eagles really started to find a rhythm once singles started. Biola took three quick sets on courts one, three and five before eventually winning the first set in all six singles fixtures as the dual drew closer to its conclusion.

Emery fit the bill of a No. 1 for Biola, particularly in the way she started and finished her straight-set win. The Ventura, California-native reported the first set felt like it took about 15 minutes because of her 6-0 score. And she put away match point by smashing an easy lob that she forced her opponent to hit.

Waterhouse and Lee also took their matches in straights with solid ground games and good serving. It's the first singles win of the season for Waterhouse and marks the second time this season that Lee has won come out on top in doubles and singles on the same day.

Those two wins clinched the dual for the Eagles. But the three women who weren't able to finish should still be happy with their play on Friday. Ines Diaz showed strong mental fortitude with her comeback in her first set after being down a break early. Diaz stuck to her gameplan and hit a number of key winners to eventually force a tiebreak that she won 7-5.

Anna Hartmann also rallied after her opponent evened the set at 5-5 and won back-to-back games to take her first set 7-5. And Faith Grisham probably only needed five minutes at most to get the first singles win of her collegiate career because she had to walk off the court with a 5-1 lead in the second.

Grisham especially looked better and better as the match carried on for Biola and had solid command of her ground strokes during her singles play. She was the only Eagles outside of the three women that won their matches that dropped three games or fewer during the second part of the dual.

The Eagles will have Saturday and Sunday to prepare for their next match, a Cornerstone Cup contest at the Biola Tennis Center against Azusa Pacific. First serve in the women's dual is scheduled for 4 p.m.
