Morinishi Magnificence Highlights 8-0 Win

Jennifer Morinishi has a near-perfect ballgame to spark huge win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball got off to a high flying start to its 2020 PacWest Conference softball season. The Eagles picked up their fourth win of the year with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Academy of Art.

Biola began its conference slate with a nearly perfect performance in all three facets of the game, getting a stellar start from Paige Austin, obviously a fantastic showing at the dish and some smooth fielding as well.

The Eagles scored four in the second inning, three in the fourth inning and a walk-off winner with no outs in their half of the fifth inning to put the game away.

Jennifer Morinishi was the one to drive in the game-winning run. The sophomore center fielder followed-up a Ruth Munoz lead-off double with a hard-hit double of her own right into the left-center field gap, ending the game early at the eight-run threshold.

Those eight runs came via a mix of hits, walks and Academy of Art errors, with Biola having no shortage of opportunities to score throughout the night. This is indicated by the fact that even in an eight-run victory the team still stranded double-digit base runners throughout the contest.

It was an opposite story for the Urban Knights who had a real tough time getting anything going against Austin. The Eagles' ace went the complete five innings to get her third win of the young season. She allowed only two base runners during that time, one hit and one walk, while striking out five.

Morinishi was the catalyst on offense all afternoon for BU. She closed the scoring with an RBI hit, but she is also the one who opened the scoring all the way back in the second inning. Mornishi hit a bases-loaded, two-out, three-run double to put a 3-0 lead into Austin's back pocket early on.
That lead grew to 4-0 in the next batter as Kayla Neff drove Morinishi home with a double of her own. Morinishi finished this contest 2-for-2 with two walks, four RBI and a pair of runs scored.

One of those two runs scored by the sophomore came as part of Biola's three-run fourth inning. Her aggressive base running forced a throwing error by ART U and allowed two runs to score on an infield single from Ari Gonzales.

Biola would add one more in that frame, but stranded the bases loaded to delay the gratification of getting that eighth, and ultimately deciding, run.

The Eagles ended game one with nine hits, five walks, a hit-by-pitch and took advantage of three errors by the opposition. Joining Morinishi with more than one base knock were Ruth Munoz (2), and Ari Gonzales (2). Munoz touched home plate three times as she continued her torrid start to the year.

Biola improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in PacWest play. Academy of Art drops to 1-9 (0-1 PacWest). The two teams follow this one up with game two of this Friday doubleheader.
