Eagles Fall In Fresno

Biola Women’s Tennis got a point in doubles and singles to bookend its trip to Fresno.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Women's Tennis made its way to Fresno on Saturday to take on PacWest peer Fresno Pacific on FPU's campus. The Eagles opened up with a 1-0 lead in the dual match after doubles and took No. 1 singles thanks to a great performance from Colbeyshae Emery. But Biola couldn't shake the Sunbirds' undefeated record and lost 5-2.

Head Coach David Goodman's women roster showed once again that it has the players at the top of its lineup has the tools to compete with anyone. The No. 1 doubles pair of Emery and Brooke Fager pulled Biola even in the chase for the doubles point with a 6-4 win in their set. Then the No. 3 team of Allison Torres and Ines Diaz sustained the momentum by winning their doubles decision by an identical 6-4 score.

The win at the No. 1 flight was a long time coming for Emery and Fager given their hard work against the best players Biola's opponents had to offer. The win on Saturday is the pair's first doubles victory since the season opener at Whittier College two weeks ago.

Diaz and Torres are now 3-0 at the No. 3 flight and Diaz leads the team in overall doubles victories with four after Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Sunbirds took control of the match once singles play started. Fresno Pacific rattled off five straight-set victories in singles to clinch the match and caused everyone in the facility to turn their attention to the No. 1 court, where Emery was locked in a battle with Maraii Borodii.

Emery fought hard from the get go and pushed the first set to five games all before Borodii broke her serve and won the set. But that wasn't enough to faze the freshman No. 1, as Emery broke Borodii back and won the second set 6-4. With all the other matches complete, the final set turned into a superbreaker that Emery dominated and won 10-5.

It's the first time in her collegiate career that Emery has won her singles match after dropping a set to her opponent.

The stretch of matches against PacWest opponents continues for Biola next week. The Eagles host Cal State Los Angeles at the Biola Tennis Center on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
