Biola Scares No. 7 Cal State LA

Biola Men’s Soccer scored back-to-back second half goals to push Cal State LA to overtime before losing on a golden goal.

LOS ANGELES --- If any evidence is needed for Biola Men's Soccer's level of determination and grittiness, Saturday's match at Cat State LA would be exhibit A or pretty close to it.

For the second-straight road match, the Eagles traveled to face a CCAA opponent that expected to win on its home field and nearly turned that expectation on its head. After falling behind 2-0 in the second half, Biola rallied with back-to-back goals that pushed the match with the No. 7 team in the nation into overtime.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team went into double OT for the second time this week, but the Golden Eagles found a put-away goal in the six-yard area to escape with the win.

Cal State LA opened up the scoring with goals off headers about five minutes before and five minutes after the halftime whistle. But Biola was able to find its way back into the match with 16 minutes of work that set the table for the first collegiate goal in Jack Kilgallon's career.

The Wheaton Academy-alumni proved for certain that his finishing ability transferred to the college game when he headed home a bending cross from Leo Thompson that found a forward in the box. Kilgallon played a total of 83 minutes in the match, almost 50 more than any of his previous appearances this season, and made the most of his first career start by bringing BUMS within one score.

That was just the development Thompson needed to provide another big goal for the Eagles and find the back of the net for the second time this season. With just over 90 seconds left in regulation time, Thompson beat the keeper to the far right post to send his team into a frenzy and give Biola the chance at the major West Region upset.

The Eagles locked in for the first overtime, fending off two Cal State LA corners and three shots on goal to keep the match even. Unfortunately, the Eagles weren't able to produce any shots in either overtime and the home team was able to put-away a loose ball around the six-yard area to score the golden goal just after the start of the second OT.

Despite the three goals, allowed freshman JD Gunn made eight saves on the night for his side and moved into second place in the PacWest with 22 total saves. He also leads the conference with two shutouts after earning a clean sheet against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday.

The Eagles will have the next week off and will return to Al Barbour Field for their next match when Concordia comes to La Mirada on Oct. 2.
