Tiebreak In Two Parts

Biola Women’s Tennis suffers a rare loss at home with tiebreakers that clinched doubles and singles for Colorado Mesa.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Tennis returned home on Monday to host Colorado Mesa and pushed the Mavericks to the brink for three and a half hours.

But at the conclusion of both singles and doubles, the Mavericks came up with the shots they needed to earn the victory and held of Biola's late charge by a score of 4-2.

After the Eagles laid the doubles decision on the No. 2 flight with a 6-4 result from Ines Diaz and Allison Torres at No. 3, Lily Waterhouse and Anna Hartmann rallied from 4-2 down and overcame three break points down 5-4 to force a tiebreaker for the first point of the dual match. Unfortunately, the Mavericks went on a roll after inching to a 3-1 lead in the tiebreaker and won the No. 2 fixture by a score of 7-6, (7-3).

The Eagles bounced right back in singles with the motivation to make it a match and boy did they. After Esther Lee and Lauren Lee lost in their first doubles match at home in a week at the No. 1 match, both women responded with straight-set victories at their respective No. 1 and No. 4 doubles matches to give Biola a short lead in the dual match at 2-1 about two hours in.

It was a great return to form by L. Lee, who's victory finished the first singles match 6-1, 6-2. The junior public relations major was automatic with flat groundstrokes that resulted in numerous winners and ran her opponent all over the court. L. Lee has won all four of her singles matches in straight-sets while dropping three game or fewer.

Esther Lee also made quick work of her opponent, 6-4, 6-3, to take her third-consecutive singles decision at the Biola Tennis Center. In the meantime, the Eagles took leads of one set to none on courts three and six to have a hand in the four matches they needed to possibly earn a win.

The Mavericks pushed back with straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 5 to bring them within one match of victory and they followed up by pushing Biola into the third set at the final two contests to be decided. Rebecca Osterberg then held serve down 5-4 to Tinisee Kandakai to stay alive in the third set and took the subsequent tiebreaker by a score of 7-3 to clinch the match for Colorado Mesa.

The Eagles will get Tuesday off before preparing for their second match of the week at the Biola Tennis Center. They host the Ottawa (Ariz.) Spirit on Thursday at 2 p.m.
