Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Biola Victorious In Opening Match

Biola Women’s Tennis impresses with its counterpunching tennis in its opening match and wins 4-0 over Hope International.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Head Coach David Goodman had a number of positive things to say in his first post-match recap of the year with Biola Women's Tennis, and those positives all boiled down to the Eagles simply playing great tennis.

The Eagles swept Hope International by a score of 4-0 after taking two of the three doubles contests and rattling off three straight-sets victories in singles. And it felt like a true team victory for Biola since all six women who took the court more than held their own against their Royals counterparts.

The impressive play began in double where two pairings that featured a returner and a freshman delivered comfortable wins. Ines Diaz and Allison Torres blazed through their match by a score of 6-0 while Sarah Morgan and Anna Hartmann cliched the point a few minutes later with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 fixture.

Both Diaz and Hartmann showed strong first serves during the opening act with the Biola Eagles. Diaz opened her singles match at the No. 1 spot with some inspired play that easily transitioned from offensive to defensive ground strokes and kept her opponent flat-footed at the baseline. Admittedly, the 5-0 start to the first set for Diaz would be cut to 5-4. But the Spaniard came back to break Kristen Russo's serve in the next game to take the first set of her collegiate singles career.

Diaz would not get to finish her match because teammates Hartmann, Allison Torres and Lily Waterhouse quickly defeated their opponents in straight sets. Hartmann's aforementioned serve was just too heavy for opponent Kayla Jensen to return consistently. And Hartmann's steady determination to stay in long rallies caused her opponents to make mistakes and ultimately drop the match 6-1, 6-1.

That result came at least 10 minutes after Lily Waterhouse rolled to a double-bagel victory at No. 3 singles that was one of Goodman's big talking points to the team after the match. Waterhouse's coach and teammates said that the Wenatchee, Washington-native played one of the best matches they had seen her play. Waterhouse attacked intelligently and was just clicking in all facets on the way to the first 6-0, 6-0 victory of her collegiate career.

With the Eagles one point away from victory, attention turned to the No. 4 and No. 5 matches where Morgan and Torres had already taken their respective first sets. It became clear very quickly in both matches that the Royals opponent needed to avoid Morgan and Torres' backhand at all costs. Both women basically took one half of the court off the table with the power and precision they had with the backhand. And that resulted in a command of the ground game that resulted in both women breaking serve multiple times and a 6-3, 6-1 win for Torres that wrapped up the team victory.

The Eagles will return to the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday for their next match. They'll host San Diego Christian beginning at 11 a.m.
