Eagles Scratch First In Tie

Men’s Soccer scores two first-half goals before going to two overtimes with Holy Names.

HAYWARD, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer played the Holy Names Hawks to a 2-2 draw at Pioneer Soccer Stadium on Thursday night, giving Head Coach Todd Elkins' team a 0-0-1 start to conference play.

The Eagles have now scored two goals or more in three-straight matches after playing Cal State Dominguez Hills to a scoreless draw three weeks ago. And Biola jumped out to a 2-0 lead for the second-consecutive match thanks to the quick scoring of Leo Thompson and Hunter Finnegan midway through the first half.

Thompson has officially started a trend of scoring in every other match after netting a Henry Reeves' pass in the 22nd minute of Thursday's match. The Englishmen now leads the Eagles in goals after scoring in three of Biola's last five contests and scored in the first half for the first time all season against the Hawks.

Reeves' and Thompson connected was followed quickly by a run down the right side by defender Hunter Finnegan that resulted in the Eagles' second goal. Finnegan just outstretch the leg of the challenging defender to push the ball to the far left post and past the keeper. He became the Eagles' third multi-goal scorer with the strike, but accomplished that distinction with just five shots to his credit through the first nine matches of the season.

Biola carried its 2-0 lead into halftime and 30 minutes into the second period until Holy Names cut into the lead. Hawks leading scorer Josiah Romero converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box with about 15 minutes left to give the home team hope. And then the Hawks executed a nice cross combination from the left side of the endline that resulted in a putaway goal and a tied match.

Elkins' group produced three corner kicks and a number of dangerous throw-ins during the two overtime periods. But the Eagles couldn't hit the ball squarely and were unable to score their first golden goal of the year. Even with Holy Names having the shot-advantage in overtime, Biola still won that battle with 10 shots to the Hawks six. Each team ended with three shots on goal, forcing each keeper to make a second-half save.

The Eagles will continue their Northern California road trip through Saturday, as they'll travel to San Rafael on October 12 to take on Dominican University at 2:30 p.m.
