Eagles Climb A Bit Higher

Biola shaves three strokes off its team score on Tuesday and gets separation from Pomona-Pitzer.

September 18, 2018

VENTURA, Calif. --- Monday's strong start proved to be no aberration for the Biola Eagles as they completed the CA State Invitational with another sub-300 round and took sole possession of eighth place on Tuesday.

Kyle McAbee caught fire a bit on Tuesday to card a 71 (-1) and finish with a team-best 147 (+3) tournament score. That score was good for 17th place for McAbee while the rest of Head Coach Cory Page's group also improved or stayed within three strokes of their score from Monday's initial play-through.

"Kyle made bogey on his final hole, but he didn't let that take away from a solid round that he got kick-started in the middle holes with three birdies," said Page. "Dom also showed a lot of heart and talent out there today, as he could barely grip the club with his right hand [due to a thumb injury]," said Page

Dominic Ariondo joined McAbee in the top-25 of the leaderboard after shooting a 74 (+2) for the second-straight day while Ben Crumley had the best improvement of the day for the Eagles, dropping eight strokes by hitting his fairways and sinking three puts from over 12 feet. He climbing five spots for a 59th-place finish.

With Austin Bishop and Kaden Page both turning in 151 scores to keep the Eagles' scores clustered together, Biola was able to outshoot the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens by one stroke on Tuesday and take sole possession of eighth place at the conclusion of the tournament. That meant Biola bested four other teams at the CA State Intercollegiate in its first tournament of the season, a result they haven't achieved in their first competition of the season since 2015-16.

Biola finished with a two-round team score of 595 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took the tournament title by finishing at -13.

"I was really proud of how the guys competed in this tournament, and was even more impressed by their positive attitudes and how they dealt with adversity during their rounds," said Coach Page. "We are looking forward to our upcoming match with Vanguard this Friday, then we will have over a month to prepare for our trip to Hawaii to compete in the Dennis Rose Invitational."
