Offense Breaks Out In Big Win

Eagles tack on seven and shut out the opponents in game one win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The goal was to get the offense back on track, and that definitely happened in game one of Biola's doubleheader with Simpson University on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles produced seven runs in six at-bats to win the game 7-0 and snap a five-game losing streak versus the Redhawks.

Biola scored twice in the first inning, twice in the second, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to build the lead that would never really be in any danger thanks to more great pitching from Terri Van Dagens and Paige Austin.

Van Dagens locked down her 10th win of the year by going four scoreless and allowing just two hits and three total baserunners to a SU offense that came into the game hitting over .320 and averaging nearly six runs-per-game.

Austin threw the final three innings and held the Redhawks without a hit, while striking out four to bring her season total up to an even 115.

The Eagles' offense provided a healthy margin of support at the very beginning of the game as a Jay Perez leadoff single set the tone for Biola's 10-hit performance. Three of those 10 hits came in that inning as Biola turned three singles into two runs.

A Ruth Munoz walk started the offense for Biola in the second inning. She came around to score on a Kayla Neff double and then Neff capped the scoring and extended the lead to four by making the most of Areana Ramos reaching on a two-out error by the shortstop.

In addition to reaching on the error, Ramos managed two hits of her own in this one to remain the Eagles' hottest hitter. She and Selina Sherlin were the two Biola players to earn two hits. Sherlin also picked up an RBI as she drove in the game's final run by singling to score Jay Perez in the bottom of the sixth.

The Eagles had a chance to end the game early with a runner in scoring position and a seven-run lead in the sixth, but a good play by the Redhawks shortstop ended the inning and gave Simpson a chance to rally with at-bats in the seventh.

They took a new approach in that seventh inning, ducking to try and persuade the home plate umpire to call balls on Austin's rise ball. It worked through the first batter, who reached on four pitches, but then Austin settled in and got three quick outs, including ending the game with a strikeout.

Missy Poti was the Eagles' best run producer on the afternoon. She went 1-for-2 with a RBI single in the first inning and a successful squeeze bunt that drove in a run in the fifth.

Biola's win improved its season record to 27-8, while the Redhawks dropped below .500 at 16-17. Game two of the doubleheader is now underway. Follow live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/biola/.
