Eagles Escape Close Call

Head Coach Lorie Coleman gets two calls overturned to help BU win.

KANEOHE, Hawaii --- Biola Softball remains perfect in PacWest play following a 5-1 extra-innings win in game two of its doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific. However, for about two minutes in the bottom of the eighth inning the Eagles were 2-1 losers in the game.

With the game tied 1-1 and two outs in the bottom of the eighth the Sharks had runners on second and third with two outs and were threatening to walk off against Paige Austin. The Sharks' last batter of the inning lined a looping ball into foul territory down the third base line, but the umpires ruled the ball fair and allowed the game-winning run to score. They claimed the ball touched the diving glove of Andi Hormel after she left her feet in fair territory, rendering the ball fair.

Head Coach Lorie Coleman came out immediately to argue the ruling and ended up getting it reversed after a brief meeting of the minds. This brought Sienna Santiago back up to the plate where Austin ended up striking her out to move the game into the ninth inning still knotted at one.

Before all that shenanigans the Eagles had to do the hard work of tying the game up. HPU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth to put all the pressure squarely on the shoulders of the Eagles, who to that point had only one hit in the game.

Hailey Boyett led off the Eagles' seventh inning at-bats with a hard-hit line drive into right field. This play was also a point of contention as the umpires initially had some confusion on if she was in the game, but coach Coleman again protested and upon a meeting the ruling was reversed and Boyett awarded first base.

She was pinch-run for by Kylie Velasco who was immediately sacrificed up to second base and later came around to score on a Ruth Munoz RBI double. After tying it up Biola managed to load the bases looking for the go-ahead run, but the Sharks' pitcher wiggled out of trouble.

Fast forward to the ninth with the game still tied, Biola was down to its last out in the inning when the floodgates opened. The Eagles' rally was started with a Jay Perez walk, and then four consecutive Biola hits led to some scoring. The biggest blow was the final of those hits, a three-run double off the bat of Boyett that brought the score to 5-1.

Hawaii Pacific got two runners on in the ninth inning, but a pair of Austin strikeouts ended the game and sent Biola home with its 13th win in a row and a sparkling 6-0 record in PacWest play.

Austin ended up with the win in the game, pitching the final four innings of the game to improve to 8-1 on the season. Biola is now 17-3 on the season, while Hawaii Pacific falls to 3-3 (0-2 PacWest).

Biola's Hawaiian road trip concludes Saturday with what looks to be the toughest test yet in Hawaii-Hilo (9-4). Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 p.m. PT.
