Fastest Ever To 15 Wins

Biola sweeps the four-game set with Chaminade to move to 15-3.

February 27, 2018

Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Contrary to the rest of this series, game four between Biola Softball and Chaminade was a low-scoring affair that was not decided until the very last out when Paige Austin got the Swords' leadoff hitter swinging to strand the game-tying run at third base.

The Eagles wiggled out with a 4-3 win in order to sweep the season series with Chaminade and improve to a perfect 4-0 in PacWest Conference play. The game four win is also the Eagles' 15th of the season (15-3). It becomes the earliest in the calendar year that BU has had 15 wins in the 25-year history of the program. Biola's previous best was winning number 15 on March 1, which happened in the 2002 and 2014 seasons.

This game was started by Paula Damas, carried on by Kaile Chavez and finished by Austin as the Eagles did well to hold the Silverswords to three runs on six hits. Chavez got the win as she was the "most effective reliever" after Damas didn't go the minimum number of innings required for a starting pitcher to earn the win.

Chavez threw two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth. She struck out three Swords and allowed only two baserunners to protect the one-run Biola lead.

The Eagles fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but answered back immediately with three of their own in the top half of the second frame. A two-out Kylie Velasco walk followed by back-to-back-to-back hits by Tori Apodaca, Karen Lieng and Jay Perez keyed the three runs that would later prove to be every bit necessary.

Biola extended that lead to 4-1 after a leadoff double from Areana Ramos turned into a run in the top of the third. Ramos touched the dish on a groundout into a double play. At that point CUH was willing to sacrifice a run for outs, a decision they'd come to regret later on when this Ramos run turned out to be the game-winner.

That would be it for the Eagles' scoring as they posted their lowest run total of the entire series. It was the pitching that locked it down the rest of the way to guarantee the sweep.

Chaminade did all they could against the Biola staff, cutting the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third before stranding the game-tying run at third after having that runner in position with just one out in the inning.

That same scenario happened in the fifth inning as the Swords once again had the game-tying run in scoring position with one away. However, Kaile Chavez dug deep and struck out two in a row to end the threat.

That was the end of Chavez's day as Austin came in during the bottom of the sixth in search of a six-out save. She set Chaminade down in order with two strikeouts and a flyout to send the game into its final inning.

The Eagles were trying hard for some insurance, getting runners to second and third, but the Chaminade pitcher (who went the distance in the game) worked her way out of trouble to keep the game at the one-run margin heading into the home team's last at-bats.

Austin got two quick outs against two Chaminade pinch-hitters and then was prepared to go toe-to-toe with the Swords' number nine hitter to complete the contest. She got two strikes on that hitter before a fly ball got caught up in the heavy winds and evaded Biola's outfield gloves resulting in a two-out triple that once again put the game-tying run on third base for CUH.

Austin then had to deal with Jackie Najera, who set the school record for RBI in a game with six earlier in the day, and attempt to get her 15th strikeout of the series to end the game. She got a called strike, swinging strike and ball called to move to count in her favor at 1-2 before Najera whiffed and allowed the Biola bench to breath a sigh of relief as the game came to a close.

It was Austin's second save of the season, which now has her alone in first in the PacWest in this category. She also leads the conference in wins (7) and strikeouts (59).

The Eagles are now 15-3 (4-0 PacWest), while Chaminade slumps to 3-8 (0-4 PacWest). Biola's Hawaiian road trip is halfway done now, as the Eagles have a doubleheader at Hawai'i Pacific (3-1, 0-0 PacWest) on Thursday and two games at Hawaii at Hilo (9-4, 0-0 PacWest) on Saturday.
