Thompson Tips Cap To Seniors

Leo Thompson records Biola’s first hat trick since October 2013 in the Eagles' 3-1 senior day win over Dominican.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer held a senior day celebration for its graduating class before Saturday's match against Dominican and junior Leo Thompson made sure they the seniors' smiles were just as big after the match as they were during pregame pictures.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' opened the day by recalling the ways that seniors Aaron Hontucan, Kousei Mattox, Wyatt Miranda, Gilbert Sotelo and Parker Setran had impacted the team and their teammates. Then Biola's striker put on a scoring exhibition with three goals against the Penguins in the Eagles 3-1 win.

Thompson's hat trick is the first for a Biola men's soccer student-athlete since Daniel Chew accomplished the feat for the Eagles on October 12, 2013. The Englishman's three goals gave him a total of 11 for the season and puts him in the company of Chew and Joey O'Keefe as the three Eagles this decade to score double-digit goals in this decade.

It took 20 minutes for the Eagles and Penguins to size each other up, as each team only took one shot-on-goal during that span. But Biola's attack surged in the 23rd minute, when a run down the right sideline opened space for Gio Passarelli to pass the ball to Thompson in space. After taking a touch, Thompson launched the ball from 25 yards out and beat the keeper William Finnie to the top-right corner for the first strike of the match.

From that point, Thompson's next two goals added up to a goal scoring exhibition. Eight minutes after his first goal, the junior sprinted into the box to get his head on a cross from near the right sideline by Lorenzo Macias and got enough on the ball to beat Finnie a second time.

The Eagles went into halftime with a 2-0 lead for the first time this season, holding a seven to two advantage in shots over the Penguins while only asking Alex Muir to make one save during the first 45 minutes. It would quickly become a 3-0 lead when Thompson decided to take care of everything himself on a free kick that bent around the wall and inside the right post.

Dominican responded with their only goal of the match shortly after Thompson completed the hat trick. But the Penguins would only produce two soft headers that had a chance to score during the rest of the match as senior captains Kousei Mattox and Parker Setran fittingly locked things down on the backline one last time.

Mattox finished his Biola career with his name in the record books for third-most minutes played (6642) and third-most starts (73). Setran isn't far behind Mattox with 5798 minutes and 59 career starts.

The Eagles finish the season on a two-match winning streak to land fifth in the PacWest final standings at 8-8-2, 6-4-1 PacWest. That record marks the second-straight season that Head Coach Todd Elkins' team has finished with a winning conference record and a .500 overall record as an NCAA Division II program.
