Bauder Wins Player of the Year

Biola also picks up four all-conference nods from PacWest.

November 14, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had arguably its best regular season in program history in 2018, going 19-3 in PacWest play to finish second in conference and sixth in the West Region.

The Eagles are on their way to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship at the end of the month, but before they leave they'll have some time to soak in some major conference award wins.

Sierra Bauder earned the biggest recognition, earning PacWest Conference Player of the Year after playing every set for the Eagles this season and leading the conference and finishing second in all of NCAA Division II with a .440 hitting percentage.

That mark broke the conference's single-season hitting record and was the best by a Biola hitter since Hall of Famer Becky Miller hit .456 back in 1985. Bauder ended the regular season with 294 kills and a team-leading 121 blocks. Bauder ended the season second in the PacWest in total blocks and fourth in blocks-per-set.

In addition to the biggest individual honor in the conference, Bauder was named among the seven players on the all-conference first team.

Bauder was not the only Eagle to land on the top team, which you'd expect from one of the conference's top teams. Redshirt sophomore Christina DenBoer ended up earning All-PacWest first team honors for the first time, despite only appearing in 63 percent of Biola's sets played.

She was astounding in those 70 sets, finishing top-10 in the conference in kills-per-set and aces-per-set. DenBoer slammed home 221 total kills, leading the team by a pretty wide margin at 3.16 kills-per-set and finishing fourth overall. She added 21 service aces, 162 digs and 34 blocks to contribute in all areas of the game for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. She ended the year with five double doubles.

The Eagles also landed two players on the All-PacWest second team, each earning their first All-PacWest award. Senior Karly Dantuma and Sami Hover were both honored for their contributions to the Eagles' excellent season.

Dantuma is finishing her final season at Biola in style. It's been her best season yet in terms of stats, but more than that she's cemented herself as one of the best, if not the best, leaders in the whole conference.

The right side eclipsed 1,000 career kills this season and is three blocks shy of 300 career blocks. This season she's had a career-best hitting percentage (.334), while compiling 290 total kills, 42 digs and 72 blocks.

Sami Hover was the Eagles' defensive rock all season. Tasked with taking the place of last season's PacWest Libero of the Year, Tess Van Grouw, Hover did not miss a beat. She set some school records along the way to compiling 519 total digs, which equates to 4.68/set - a number that no one at Biola has hit in decades.

She ended the regular season second in the conference in total digs and is third in digs-per-set, which is incredible considering the Eagles' defensive front being as great at blocking the ball as it is.

Hover has probably about five matches left in the season with the NCCAA Championship tournament. She could become the third Biolan ever to top 600 digs.
