AZUSA, Calif. --- It's back and hopefully better than ever! Biola and Azusa Pacific are set to renew their basketball rivalry this Saturday evening at the Felix Event Center in the first conference matchup between these two teams in 2,163 days.
The Eagles and Cougars were both Golden State Athletic Conference members from the 1994-95 season through the 2011-12 season and established what many consider the "best small college rivalry." Saturday night sees the two sides rekindle the great rivalry in a brand new way.
Both teams each have midweek competitions this week as well, as Biola plays Dixie State in Utah and APU hosts Fresno Pacific, but the real treat of the week is Saturday's double-feature.
Between 2005 and 2012 the attendance of the Biola-APU contests played in Azusa averaged 2,136 people, with three instances going 2,900 or more fans. With both schools coming off of Christmas break we hope to see more of the staff, faculty and alumni come out to support with students still not fully back to campus.
The women begin the evening with a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the No. 3 team in the region, APU (14-2, 5-1 PWC). The men's game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip. APU currently leads the conference with a 5-1 PacWest mark (9-5 overall). Biola is considered the underdog in each matchup, but the Eagles are the side with the winning streak in the all-time series. BU won the last meeting on the men's side and the last two meetings on the women's side.
After a brief hiatus, the teams are back together again as PacWest Conference members and should be paired for a long time to come. To celebrate the renewal of the rivalry the two institutions launched the Cornerstone Cup presented by West Coast Sand & Gravel.
Each year the schools will compete head-to-head to take home the coveted trophy and title as the best athletic department that year. In 2017-18, the Eagles have a 40-10 lead. There are 140 total points available.
General adult tickets for Saturday's games may be purchased online at THIS LINK. Azusa Pacific also offers the following ticket categories: Seniors 65+ ($7), Students ($7), Military ($7) and Children age 7 & under (FREE). The discounted tickets may only be purchased at the on-site box office.
