Eagles Finish Off Fall Season

Biola finished off its fall with a head-to-head dual meet at Whittier College.

December 09, 2017

WHITTIER, Calif. --- Biola Swim & Dive followed up one of its busiest weekends of the season with a smaller scale head-to-head dual meet against the Whittier Poets on Saturday morning.

The Eagles made their way down the road to Whittier for the first time since November 2014 and just focused on putting in some good swims after a demanding week of training. Whittier won the dual meet based on points, but the effort put in by the team cannot be understated.

"Although the meet did not go as we had planned, I think the coaches and the team realized that coming off of a focus meet, we couldn't get wrapped up in winning and losing," said Head Coach Ryan Kauth. "We needed to concentrate on what bad habits we could improve upon, and I think we have a lot to learn from today. That's really all you can hope for in a tough meet, is understanding where things went wrong, and what we can do better moving forward."

The meet included diving and the Eagles' Nichole Landon placed second on the women's side with a score of 154.6 in the 1-meter board.

The men's team got a standout performance from Jake Allen who won the 1,000-freestyle with a 10:18.38. His victory was by nearly 20 second over the second-place swimmer from Whittier.

A pair of Eagles earned wins in the race that is one-fifth of that one. Andrew Benson (1:48.48) and Emily Silzel (1:59.32) were victorious in the 200-freestyle. The races were complete opposite as Silzel won by over seven seconds and Benson out-touched his top opponent by less than one second.

Rebecca Brandt was involved in the closest individual race of the day. The junior won the 100-butterfly by just one-hundredth of a second with a 1:03.12.

Silzel became one of two Eagles to finish with two individual wins on the day when she clinched the 100-breaststroke. The sophomore touched the wall in 1:09.28 to win by over a second once again.

Whittier managed to steal most of the relay points in this meet, winning three of four. However, the Eagles finished the meet strong with a win in the women's 200-freestyle relay. The team of Silzel, Brandt, Rachel Stinchcomb and Lisa Tixier finished in 1:40.77, with two swimmers splitting in the 23 second range.

"I fully expect the swimmers to continue to thrive in the training environment as we prepare for the second half of the season," said Kauth. "This team has been tough, resilient, and able to bounce back from anything the entire year, so I expect no difference going forward. These Eagles are a great group, and they'll show that in the new year."

The team's next chance to show what they've got comes Jan. 12 in a meet hosted by Chapman University that features Chapman, Biola, La Verne and Mills College.
