Cybulski Cinches Three Points

Biola finds a late breakthrough against Holy Names to win, 2-1.

HAYWARD, Calif. --- The 2017 regular season had its ups and its down for Head Coach Todd Elkins men's soccer team, but the Eagles were nothing if not resilient. Biola finished its PacWest schedule on Saturday with a high note, defeating Holy Names University, 2-1.

Sammy Mckay got the ball rolling with the first goal of the match at the 30 minute mark. Then Jack Cybulski landed the final blow with three minutes left in regulation to grasp all three points for Biola. The win finalizes the Eagles' PacWest schedule with a winning record of 7-5-1 after Biola was projected to finish ninth in the conference preseason poll.

The teams fought a battle in the trenches at midfield for most of the match. Biola only took five shots during the contest while Igor Puglia only faced four shots-on-goal from the home team.

It was not until the 31st minute that the Eagles took their first shot of the match. But the wait was worth it because defender Sammy McKay was able to score his fourth goal of the season with his patented header on a Kousei Mattox set piece.

Puglia saved the Hawks' first attempt at an equalizer in the 42nd minute but Miguel Madruga was able to tied the score just 26 seconds before halftime on a header of his own.

Undeterred by the tie score, the Eagles rallied after the halftime break and denied seven shots from Holy Names before Cybulski found his opening at 86:38. Cybulksi places himself at the right corner of the six-yard box for a long throw from Hunter Finnegan and pushed it of the Hawk's keeper and past the goal line.

It was Cybulski's second goal in the Eagles' last two matches.

The freshman's contribution of four goals during conference play will be one of the highlights of the 2017 season. As will the wind at home against Notre Dame De Namur and on the road against Azusa Pacific. The Eagles have a lot of build on headed into the 2018 season and have a lot of be proud of for how they represented themselves during their first season in a NCAA Division II conference.
