Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a rematch of last year's Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament final at Al Barbour Field on Saturday night as the No. 15 Eagles hosted the No. 9 Vanguard Lions in a battle for the top of the conference table.
Â
The script was unfortunately flipped from last year's result as the higher-ranked Lions came away with a gritty 1-0 victory in a match that had all the feels of a back-and-forth playoff-type battle.
Â
The game's lone goal was the absolute worst type of goals that a soccer game can contain; one that happens just seconds before the close of a half. The Lions' goal came from an unlikely source as freshman Miguel Tapia scored his first collegiate goal in what was definitely the biggest match and biggest moment of the season for VUSC.
Â
One man's joy was a whole team's tribulation as the Eagles, despite having two solid, really high-pressure chances in the first 25 minutes or so of play, had to enter the halftime locker room staring at a 1-0 deficit to their biggest rival in the conference.
Â
The second half was a bit flat on both sides as only nine total shots were taken, including just three from Biola's attackers. Goalkeeper
Igor Puglia came up big late in the half with two daring chances where he ranged away from his goal to come up with critical, challenging saves.
Â
His work kept the deficit to a minimum, but no moments of inspiration were there to be had for BU at the other end of the pitch as the team suffered a third 1-0 loss this season.
Â
Biola falls to 7-3 overall and is unfortunately dropped to 2-2 in GSAC competition. The Eagles will look to rebound on Tuesday of next week as it has another tough test in the form of a road match against Westmont. The Warriors defeated Vanguard 3-1 earlier this week.
Â
The difference in that match was that Vanguard was minus the defender that can be most credited with keeping the Eagles off the board tonight, Josh Davis.
