Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola was well on its way to a game one victory, but allowed a bunch of runners in the later innings and ultimately ends up leaving San Diego Christian with a 1-1 split.
Â
Biola dropped game one to the Hawks, 3-6, allowing all six runs in the final three innings, and came back with dominant pitching and timely enough hitting to scrape out a 5-1 win in the second game.
Â
Reba DePriest got the start in both games, getting one win and one loss to end the day with a 12-3 record after combining to throw 9.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.
Â
She got off to a great start in the first game, allowing just three hits and no runs to head into the fourth inning with a 3-0 lead. DePriest was firing through those innings, striking out four of the nine outs she recorded.
Â
The Eagles got their three runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Biola got back-to-back singles from
Kimmy Triolo and
Bria Madrid before a
Brooke Madrid sacrifice fly scored one and
Selina Sherlin did the heavy lifting with a two-run shot.
Â
That was it for the Eagles' offense in the opener, which ultimately led to the loss after the Hawks got three in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth. SDC got a complete game from Josie Tucker, who won her eighth game of the season.
Â
Game two was a different script with all the same characters. DePriest breezed through her five innings of work, striking out 10 batters and surrendering just one hit, a homerun to Hannah Romanski.
Â
Biola opened the scoring again with a single run in the third inning. That run came on a
Kasey Hormel sacrifice fly that pushed home
Bria Madrid.
The Eagles' big inning came in the fourth, when the San Diego Christian defense seemed to have completely checked out. Four errors in the inning allowed Biola to score three runs and extend to what was a 4-0 lead at that point.
Â
The final two runs of the game both came on big flies, Romanski's and one from
Brooke Madrid with one out in the top of the seventh. It is Madrid's first career homerun.
Â
Triolo saw two innings of work in the second game and rebounded nicely from a shaky outing in the opener. She held the Hawks to just one hit, again using the groundout as her biggest weapon, and picked up her second save of the season.
Â
No. 15 Biola moved to 21-9 (8-4 GSAC) with the split, and San Diego Christian moved to 20-8 (5-3 GSAC). The Eagles have over a week off to rest and recover before traveling to Antelope Valley for a doubleheader on March 25.
