Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- One goal would have gotten the job done, but the 2015 Biola Men's Soccer team does not settle for less than the best, and that was true again on Saturday as the Eagles wrapped up the team's first ever outright Golden State Athletic Conference Championship with a flashy 5-0 win over Arizona Christian.
Â
Biola was hoping to wrap up the championship with a win last Saturday, but it suffered a bitter overtime defeat at the hands of The Master's College. This Saturday the team decided to leave no doubt in decimating the Firestorm defense and making a statement headed into the conference tournament.
Â
"It was exciting to be a part of this game and to recognize that the team has done well enough to be playing for the conference championship today," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "They earned it. They worked really hard this year and believed in each other."
Â
Jarrett Pugh's goal that started the scoring in the 21
st minute would turn out to be the conference-clinching goal, which is quite an achievement for the sophomore midfielder.
Â
His goal secured the program's first regular season championship since 2002. That year was a three-way tie atop the GSAC standings, so this outright championship (by one point over No. 13 Vanguard) is a very special experience.
Â
"We had to get it done so there was a bit of that pressure," said Elkins. "Arizona hasn't had a great season, but I think sometimes it's just the pressure of the moment.
Â
Once Pugh got the scoring started there was no stopping it as goal after goal after goal began to light up the scoreboard at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
Â
With every passing successful strike you could see the season-long weight being lifted off the shoulders of each and every one of Elkins' players on the field.
Â
The familiar names of
Devin Leon and
Joey O'Keefe rounded out the scoring in the first half as Biola took its 3-0 lead into the break.
Stephen Tanquary assisted O'Keefe's goal as the captain-to-captain connection seemed fitting on this final day of their final regular season together.
Â
The seconds half saw two guys get rewarded for the high motor minutes they've put in all season long.
Thomas Samayoa and
Daniel Martinez put the icing on top of the cake with their goals in the 69
th and 89
th minutes to widen the margin of victory. It was the second goal of the season for each guy.
Â
So the win wraps up a 12-4-1 regular season for this Eagles team. It included the conference-winning 8-1-1 GSAC mark and a phenomenal 8-2 home record. The heavy lifting happened on the road though as Biola finished 2-1 during its back-to-back-to-back road games to end the regular season.
Â
"We had a great time last night reflecting on the season," said Elkins. "It's great to hear how much these guys mean to each other and how much they rely on God and have accountability with one another to remind themselves of what's really important. Sometimes that brotherhood can be hard to find, but they found it."
Â
The team will return to the Al Barbour Field where it has been so good this year to attempt to continue its conquest over the conference. Biola will host the GSAC Championship Tournament Semifinals and Finals on Nov. 12 and Nov. 14.
