HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEW
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The floodgates were open and gushing at Al Barbour Field on Thursday early-evening as Biola Men's Soccer dismantled William Jessup with a powerful 4-1 victory to remain undefeated in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Â
This was the first night this season that the Eagles have had the benefit of having
Joey O'Keefe,
Stephen Tanquary,
John Hanscom, Leo Contreras and
Devin Leon all in the starting 11 and boy oh boy did it pay off.
Â
All four goals came from that group of players, including a marvelous two tallies from senior
John Hanscom who notched his first two scores of this season on some beautiful attempts. Tanquary also scored his first goal of the season, while Contreras tacked on his team-leading sixth.
Â
After a relatively peaceful first 20 minutes action began to build up quickly as the pace of play escalated with some ball being won in the midfield and turned.
Â
Biola got on the board first when the senior captain Tanquary scored off a selfless giveaway from Contreras who swept the ball to the penalty kick area and the Tank finished it with a smooth swipe in the 24
th minute.
Â
The elation from that opening score was almost immediately dampened when the very next run resulted in a goal for the visiting team that knotted the score once again.
Â
The Warriors' goal came on a ball played forward into the box that was headed home by Dylan Valentine. It was Valentine's first goal of the season and the only thing that troubled
JT Addington all night long.
Â
Once the scoring was opened in that first half there was no stopping it. It was not a good time to be a goalkeeper at Al Barbour Field, especially a keeper wearing a William Jessup crest.
Â
Biola turned up the pressure as it looked for the go-ahead goal, and it was fan favorite Hanscom to find the back of the next on Contreras' second assist of the evening.
Â
It was a very similar finish to Tanquary's as Hanscom made a run into the box when there was a gaggle of players from both team creating traffic in front of the keeper. Somehow Contreras found him back towards the top of the box and Hanscom finished it flushly. This made three goals in fewer than six minutes and it was BU with the 2-1 advantage.
Â
Just over four minutes later was the final tally of the first frame. It was Contreras to get rewarded with the score after setting up two of his teammates. This was easily the most beautiful score of the night as the junior forward used the back of his head to push a long free kick from
Kousei Mattox into the back of the net.
With a 3-1 lead in hand just 33 minutes into the game Biola settled down its offensive attack for most of the rest of the first half. Good news is the Biola defense kept the Warriors completely quiet too as the two sides went into the half with the 3-1 score line.
Â
Just five minutes into the new half Hanscom got his second score of the game. He and
Keaton Kerr had a 2-on-1 break that finished with a great pass through by Kerr that set up Hanscom for the one-touch finish.
Â
He had a few more chances for the hat trick before Head Coach
Todd Elkins took him from the lineup pretty early in the second half.
Â
Despite having a three-goal advantage Biola continued to push throughout the remainder of the game, ultimately having the same amount of chances in the second half as they did in the first, but not finding paydirt any more.
Â
Helping facilitate the Eagles' fantastic offensive performance was some strong midfield play throughout the 90 minutes. It was also the midfield that did well to dispossess the WJU squad time in and time out.
Â
So the Eagles keep that unblemished GSAC mark at 7-3-1 (3-0-1 GSAC) while William Jessup is still seeking a win at 3-6-1 (0-3 GSAC).
