Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- After two rough matches, the Eagles broke through in a big way on Tuesday evening by starting Golden State Athletic Conference play on a high note with a 3-1 win over Arizona Christian.
Â
It took a very strong second half, keyed by a phenomenal one-on-one save by
JT Addington and some fancy footwork from
True Tamplin, but eventually two late goals got it done for the Eagles, who improve to 4-2-1 (1-0 GSAC).
Â
Biola was playing with a chip on its shoulder following two matches which saw it get outscored 7-1 and dropping out of the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll earlier this afternoon.
Â
The added motivation helped the Eagles get on the board first thanks to some aggressive play by their midfielders, who got the ball into their attacking third and to their fleet-footed forwards.
Â
"Our guys played really well at times tonight," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "They moved the ball quickly and were looking to strike first."
Â
Biola opened the scoring following a pass into the box from
John Hanscom that got deflected by
Stephen Tanquary to the foot of
Stephen Campos, who netted it to get the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The play was perfectly developed by a long diagonal from Biola's defense to Hanscom.
The Firestorm earned the next goal, after getting awarded a free kick for kicking the ball away from the goal into the arms of a crashing Biola defender.
This left the match tied at one headed into the locker room, which did not at all reflect the tone of the match, as Biola outshot ACU 7-4 in the period, earned every corner kick in the match and allowed the Firestorm just one shot-on-goal.
Â
"We went into halftime very disappointed to be 1-1, but we came back out determined to get the lead back," said Elkins.
Â
For a split-second, it looked as if it would not Biola regaining the lead, but ACU snatching it, as at the 65-minute mark David Alton had a great one-on-one opportunity against Addington.
Â
The junior keeper came up big between the pipes and changed the momentum of that half to be in the favor of the Eagles. This is when
True Tamplin became the man of the match.
Â
In the 69
th minute, he pushed a pass to the near post that found
Joey O'Keefe waiting for an easy tap-in goal. The whole team let out a sigh of relief and celebrated before getting back to the action.
Â
The spotlight went straight back onto Tamplin, who took a pass from
Daniel Martinez, took a prep touch and then buried one into the upper right corner of the goal to buy Biola some insurance with just three minutes left to play.
Â
Biola will ride this victory straight back into training, as it preps for a Saturday night road match with Hope International.
