Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- It began in similar fashion to the 0-0 draw the two teams played to just two weeks ago, but it did not end in similar fashion as a 2-0 Vanguard win ends Biola's season in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament First Round.
Â
The first 59 minutes of the match were scoreless, giving the Eagles and Lions 169 straight scoreless minutes of play against one another this season, but a deflected header led to a perfect one-timer for Kelvin Fares that broke the scoreless streak and put the Lions ahead 1-0.
Â
This goal went to the side that was the better squad throughout that 59 minutes of play, as the Lions took 16 shots to Biola's five. It was high-octane attack that
JT Addington did a great job to defend against throughout much of the match, but could not control the ball off his sixth save of the match and it resulted in the Lions' go-ahead goal.
Â
After this goal, the odds of a Biola win significantly decreased, as this 2014 team entered the game with an 0-5-1 record in games where it surrendered the first goal of the match.
Â
That downward trend was solidified when Juan Arellano received a through ball up the middle and buried a shot to the right of Addington with less than four minutes remaining in the game to give Vanguard a 2-0 advantage.
Â
It was a strike Biola definitely could not recover from, failing to get off any more shots after that go-ahead goal and ending the season with a 7-6-4 overall record.
Â
The Eagles' offense simply could not retain possession of the ball on an afternoon where they needed to. The Lions were one of the best offensive teams in the conference all season long, finishing second in the GSAC in goals and total points. They also took more shots than any other team in the conference, proven by their 24-to-8 outshooting of Biola, which had the fourth-most shots in the conference this season.
Biola's season comes to a close with everyone involved likely longing for much more. The 2014 squad was one with so much talent and so much potential, but it simply just couldn't find the back of the net when it needed to through most of the year, including today's contest.
Â
The good news is its two top scorers, and two of its three All-GSAC honorees,
Stephen Tanquary and
Joey O'Keefe, will be back on the pitch in 2015.
Stephen Campos,
Sava Pantic,
Michael Kute and
Alex Kincade each suited up for the last time for the Eagles this afternoon, and they will be missed.
Â
Vanguard improved to 11-6-1 with the win and moves on to play Concordia on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
