HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The cliché that you need to score early and score often is a given, but it has been especially important for Biola as of late, since the Eagles fell behind by two in each of its last two Golden State Athletic Conference matches.

They came out with a newfound determination and lived up to that cliché, scoring two goals in the first 27 minutes en route to a powerful 4-1 win over William Jessup on Saturday evening.

"We came out with pretty determined attitude and that was the most important part of tonight, really," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We had to come out stronger than we've ever come out and get the lead and never look back."

True Tamplin got the crowd going as he netted the first goal of the game in just the third minute. He received a fantastic cross from Stephen Tanquary and crushed it past the Warriors' starting keeper, Zach Kammerer. Tamplin continues a fantastic first campaign for the Eagles. He now has four goals in 11 shots-on-goal and is shooting with tremendous accuracy as 70 percent of his shots go on net.

Another newcomer got on the tally sheet in the 27th minute as Clayton Mohler netted his first career goal on a service from deep that turned into a free goal for the freshman. Mohler sent a ball into the box with intentions of finding Tanquary, but the Eagles' team-leader in goals missed the service but drew the keeper out enough so Mohler's pass could bend into the goal off the post.

"Clayton was much crisper in his possession tonight," said Elkins. "He was less predictable with where he was playing the ball, using all the different areas of the field. He played well on and off the ball and had a great game defensively."

Once the Eagles got a two-goal lead they could not let up. Entering play the team averaged just two goals per contest, but that threshold did not seem to be limiting them this evening.

The did not let up at all on the Warriors, knowing that William Jessup would not let up despite being down. Biola took 11 shots after taking the 2-0 lead, four more than they had up to that point.

"One thing we saw from William Jessup is that you could get even a couple goal lead and they still keep on coming," said Elkins. "We could never take our foot off the gas. We did a much better job of sustaining the intensity, desire, work rate and team play when we needed it."

Tanquary extended the lead to 3-0 with his seventh goal of the season. Sava Pantic passed a through ball into the top of the box where Tanquary dribbled past the last two defenders and finished to the top corner. His three points tonight help him move up to 16 on the season, which ties him with Connor Gordon of Concordia for the most in the GSAC.
The Warriors finally got a goal to make it 3-1, but committed a penalty in the 78th minute leading to a Pantic penalty kick goal.

The Eagles improve to 5-4-1 (2-2 GSAC) on the season, but face a tough conference slate ahead. Their next three games are all against opponents currently inside the top half of the conference standings. Two of those three contests take place at Al Barbour Field, including their next match on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

"If we can take what we've learned from our recent tough losses and take that approach into the rest of our games, we could potentially be successful," said Elkins "I am OK with those tough losses being super important lessons for our team. If those are lessons that could change the fiber of our team a bit, even impacting the character of our team it was well worth it. I think there's a great road for us ahead."
