Cougars Bite Off More Than They Can Chew

Daniel Chew buries the overtime penalty kick, moving BU to 2-0-0.

Daniel Chew powered his third goal of the year past a diving keeper on an overtime penalty kick.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Azusa Pacific stepped onto Al Barbour field on Tuesday night, and after running into Daniel Chew and JT Addington, they must wish they never even came.

Daniel Chew scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick that was awarded less than a minute into the first overtime period. The PK came after Stephen Day shot one towards the goal and APU defender Tanner Akol got called for a handball.

Biola and Azusa are familiar foes, as they have a rivalry that goes very far back, most recently when they spent 18 years competing against one another in the Golden State Athletic Conference from 1994-2012.

Azusa Pacific left the conference after the 2011-2012 season and joined the Pacific West Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. They came back tonight to face BU and try to prevent the Eagles from picking up their second win of the season.

The Cougars came close to accomplishing their mission, as they played very cautiously near the end of what was shaping up to be a 0-0 draw. The pace of the game seemed to slow down a lot at the end of regulation, especially when APU had the ball.

"I think that at times they (APU) looked casual," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "It is because they are comfortable on the ball and they were looking to get a good opportunity for one of their playmakers."

The score line for first 90 minutes of the game might look very casual, as the teams played to a regulation draw, but it was anything but. Tempers flared on each team as the game was called very tightly but the referee and linesmen.

BU was called for four different yellow cards and Azusa was called for two of their own. The most notable caution issued came in the 65th minute as Carlos Ballesteros was cautioned after arguing a very questionable offside call that erased a 1-on-1 breakaway chance for the senior forward.

Each team was called for its fair share of offside plays, APU with four and Biola with five, and they both had a bunch of free kick foul opportunities as the referee rarely allowed them to play on advantage.

It was the work of lockdown defenders on both sides that prevented any sort of advantage from being awarded as the back lines of both teams battled throughout the game to prevent many solid scoring chances.

APU's best chance came with just 22 minutes remaining in regulation as they were able to string together three solid scoring opportunities together after winning a corner kick. Two shots deflected off of the goal frame and back into play when a third shot was kicked to Addington's left and he managed a diving stop to end the attack.

This stop was one of just two saves for Addington, as his back line provided protection from many shots on goal, and helped him secure the first shutout of his collegiate career.

"I complimented our keeper and our back four for a really good job tonight," said Elkins. "Our back four really worked together well and JT made a really great save early in the first half tipping a ball out for a corner."

BU led APU in shots 18-10 and shots on goal 4-2.

Tonight's win is especially important to the Eagles players because of the deep rivalry implications. The game nearly got played as an exhibition instead of an official match, but the players stressed the importance of this matchup to Elkins and he decided to use an official match out of respect to the desires of his team.

"The guys really respect Azusa and like the rivalry," Elkins said. "It was a little bit of a risk because they (APU) are a really good team. The guys had belief though, and sometimes that is the most important thing.

It all worked out well for the Eagles as with the victory they move to 2-0-0 on the season and will next face Marymount College next Tuesday at Al Barbour Field.
