Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- It was a showdown for the ages at Concordia's soccer field on Saturday, as for the second time in three years Biola and CUI met to determine the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament title.
Â
Two seasons ago it was the Eagles walking away with the conference crown after a back and forth affair led to a 3-2 Biola win in double overtime. This time, the roles were reversed as Biola fell 3-2 in a thriller in Irvine.
Â
Daniel Chew opened up the scoring to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. He found the rebound off a shot by
Joey O'Keefe that got blocked, and he hammered it home to the left side for his 17
th score of the season.
Â
It is his fourth consecutive game with a goal, and after he found the net, the Eagles seemed primed to win their seventh straight match.
Â
Biola's all-league defensive front stepped it up for the remainder of the first frame, and most of the second, to give BU a solid advantage late into the game.
Â
Isaac Gettis evened the score 60 minutes in and opened the floodgates for both teams to pile on goals throughout the final 30 minutes.
Â
Just four minutes after Gettis knotted it up Chew found the net once again, again off an assist from O'Keefe. His redirect goal put Biola in a spot they were familiar with, leading Concordia, on their field, late in the game.
Â
Earlier this season Biola took down the Eagles 3-0 on their turf to hand Concordia their first home loss since the last time BU beat them in the tournament finals.
Â
Mario Soto ensured that the same script would not be written once again, as he converted on a penalty kick opportunity to tie the score at two with 15 minutes left in the second 45-minute period.
Â
Jordan Brinkley, CUI's keeper, had to come up with some massive saves late to keep Biola from grabbing a third goal, and he was successful in his attempt as he made six saves in the match, all before Gettis struck again in the 85
th minute to secure CUI's second consecutive GSAC tournament championship and sixth trip to the NAIA national championships.
Â
JT Addington tacked on three saves for the Eagles as he fell to 14-4-1 on the season, and Biola fell to 14-4-1 on the season.
Â
Despite the loss, the Eagles still have a solid chance of earning an at large bid to the NAIA national championship. They will find out tomorrow, Nov. 17, at 5:30 p.m. The pairings for opening round play are announced on Monday on the NAIA website.
