Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A soccer game is a long haul, it is 90 minutes, or more, of intense physical action that takes every ounce of energy out of all 11 players on the pitch. A Concordia versus Biola soccer game is that intense and then some, as emotions run high throughout the entire matchup.
Â
Tonight was no exception to that as the two squads battled through an entire match, fighting for every inch, possession and foul call. In the end Concordia was able to knock off No. 8 Biola, defeating them 2-1 and handing them their first loss of the year.
Â
"It is a really tough result off of that goal at the end," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "I do not feel good at all about that goal. I thought it would be us to score the next goal, as we were building and creating after the equalizer."
Â
Concordia came out first and got a goal 15 minutes into the second half after a competitive scoreless first half. Mario Soto picked up CUI's first score after being at the right place at the right time to head in another players' shot off the crossbar.
Â
Daniel Chew and the Eagles countered quickly after earning a corner kick on the possession immediately after the CUI score.
Stephen Day took a short pass of the corner from
Stephen Campos, and he swung it in to Chew who was waiting on the far side of the net and knocked in the equalizer.
Â
The goal was Chew's team-leading seventh of the year, and Day picked up his team-leading third assist, Campos' assist was his first of the year.
Â
After Chew's goal in the 62
nd minute the game returned to a physical, defensive deadlock. Both teams battled out the tie for another nearly 20 minutes until it was Soto again who knocked away the game-winner.
Â
"They had some decent players, and we knew that if we didn't win the balls we should win, they could take advantage," said Elkins. "We knew it would be an emotional game, so we needed to rely on playing some good, clean soccer, and tonight we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be."
Â
Concordia outshot Biola 21-13, but only managed to get five of those on target, making the one goal loss even more disappointing.
Â
Concordia improves to 5-3-0 (2-0 GSAC) and drops Biola to 7-1-1 (1-1 GSAC). The No. 8 Eagles move on to take on Arizona Christian in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Tuesday evening.
