Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- It has been a tough last couple of weeks for No. 18 Biola, as they have lost three of four and are 1-2 on the road this year. Tides changed for the Eagles today as they dethroned a conference opponent on their home field, picking up a 1-0 shutout over Vanguard.
Â
JT Addington led the way for BU, not allowing a single goal while facing 13 shots from the Lions' offense. The keeper improves to 9-2-1 and secured his sixth shutout of the season.
Â
Carlos Ballesteros led the offense for the Eagles with the lone goal of the match, picking up his third of the year off a cross that gave an assist to
Stephen Day and
Scott Hayes.
Â
While Biola entered the match scuffling, the Lions came into the contest scorching hot and looking to break into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics top 25 with a win.
Â
The Lions had only lost one of their previous four matches and were playing their first true home match of the season. The Lions came out quick looking to take advantage of their home field, and they put up two quick shots within the first three minutes, and would have had a third up if not for an offsides call.
Â
BU would eventually overtake the offensive momentum as they led the two squads in shots on goal 4-2. The Lions continually created chances for themselves, but were consistently flagged for being ahead of the play. They had five offsides called, as opposed to the Eagles' one.
Â
As to be expected in an intense in-conference clash, fouls and cautions were doled out by the officials like candy on Halloween. While Vanguard was flagged for five more fouls than BU, the Eagles three yellow cards trumped VUSC's one.
Â
The win pushes the Eagles into a tie for third place in the Golden State Athletic Conference, just trailing Concordia and San Diego Christian, who have a combined 9-1-2 conference record.
Â
Biola improves to 9-3-1 (3-3 GSAC) and drops the Lions to 6-5-1 (2-3-1 GSAC).
Â
Next up for BU is another conference clash, this one with Hope International and back at the cozy confines of Al Barbour Field. The match begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.Â
