Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was supposed to be a close battle, it was supposed to be a low-scoring affair, but what it turned out to be was a high-scoring runaway for the No. 8 Eagles who got the wheels back on the track with a 4-1 win over Westmont.
"It was a little weird for me tonight," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "That (Westmont) is not only my old school, but that is my old coach who I played under for three years. It is hard to compete with that because I have such a respect for him."
Â
Westmont's coach Dave Wolf is in his 23rd season at the helm of the Warriors, who have dominated the all-time series against BU, picking up 44 wins as opposed to the Eagles' 12. He is also the eighth winningest active coach with 270-plus wins, and his Warriors dominated the most recent matchups, defeating Biola 5-0 last season.Â
Â
Daniel Chew came out and wiped all memory of that last match out of the mind of everyone on the pitch and in the stands. The senior forward netted the Eagles first score just 10 minutes and 39 seconds into the game with a shot timed perfectly off a cross by
Scott Hayes.
Â
Chew did not stop there though as he picked up an unassisted beauty just three minutes later to put BU up 2-0. He intercepted a WC pass and quickly dribbled the ball to right of the Warrior's keeper and booted it in for his ninth of the season. He immediately came over to hug the Eagles' primary assistant coach
Phil Yovino following the score.
Â
The fast forward could not be stopped in his quest to lead the Eagles to just their second win in the last month as he completed the hat trick with his third score in just the 19
th minute.
"I thought the guys were so determined before this game, they could not wait for this game to come," said Elkins. "They took all their dissapointment in how conference play has gone so far and they turned it into something positive. They just decided enough is enough."
With a 3-0 lead at halftime it appeared that nothing the Warriors could do could stop the Eagles quick-moving offense. However, Dave Wolf's squad came out looking like an entirely different team to start the second half.
Â
Emmanuel "Nana" Akyen put Westmont on the board with his third tally of the year after his speed gained him a good position to boot the ball into the back right corner of the net past
JT Addington.
"Westmont just never stopped playing, you would think there would be some sort of letdown, but there was no chance, and that goes back to coach Wolf," said Elkins.
Â
Following the sign of life from the Warriors a perfect entry pass from
Ryan Cooley found the head of
Joey O'Keefe who tacked on the insurance goal to finish the scoring with Biola's fourth of the game in the 83
rd minute.
Â
Addington moves to 8-2-1 on the season after picking up the win with two saves. It was his seventh game this season holding the opponent to one or fewer goals.
Â
Despite the final score the game was nearly identical statistically as the teams were tied or within one of one another in shots, saves, corner kicks and fouls.
Â
No. 8 BU improves to 8-2-1 (2-2 GSAC) and the Warriors drop to 6-4-0 (2-2 GSAC). Biola will move on to a meet-up at San Diego Christian Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.
