Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola's defense struggled allowing a number of goals on miscues along the back line, leading to its worse loss in five years, losing 5-0 at Westmont College in a GSAC match on Saturday afternoon at Thorrington Field.
The Eagles fall to 6-4-1 on the season with the loss and to 2-2-0 in conference play. The Warriors improve to 4-4-1 and pick up their first GSAC win to move to 1-2-1.
The loss was the worst for Biola since the 2007 season when the Eagles suffered an identical fate in a match in Santa Barbara against Westmont. On that day, the Warriors scored five goals on 13 shots and cruised to a 5-0 win. Since then, the Eagles have allowed three or more goals twice.
It seemed as though the match was played evenly between the two long-time rivals with Westmont holding a slight 15-14 edge in shots. However, the combination of backline mistakes and some impressive saves by the Warriors' goalkeeper made for a lopsided final result.
The match got off to an inauspicous start for Biola as the Warriors would get the first goal in the 30th minute as a simple cross couldn't be handled by the Biola netminder and rolled into the goal.
In the second half, the Eagles opened with a number of quality chances, but none of them found the back of the net as Matthew McNab made some fantastic saves to keep the slight lead.
Westmont scored twice in a four-minute stretch 10 minutes into the second half to break the game wide open. Both goals came off misplayed balls by the Biola backline, which turned into odd-man rushes and easy goals.
The Warriors would cap the scoring with a pair of late goals, the second of which came on a penalty kick.
BIola looks to rebound from the loss on Wednesday, hosting red-hot San Diego Christian (6-3-1, 2-1-1 GSAC) in a key GSAC showdown at 7:00 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
