LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola and Azusa Pacific put on another incredible show In what was the final regular season match between long-time GSAC rivals. However, the outcome of the game did not go the way of the Eagles as the Cougars scored goals in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime to escape with a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon in La Mirada.
The Eagles suffer their second-straight loss and drop to 7-4-2 on the season and to 2-3-0 in GSAC play. Azusa Pacific, which is leaving the GSAC with two other schools next year to move to NCAA Division II, improves to 9-2-1 and to 3-1-1 in the conference.
Biola opened the scoring with a goal in the 41st minute as Dylan Wingrove collected a loose ball and drove it into the lower left corner of the net from just inside the penalty box. The Eagles had owned the first half, outshooting the Cougars 13-5 through the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Azusa Pacific came out firing and controlled possession for the most part. However, the Cougars were unable to find the back of the net until late in the period with just over two minutes remaining, Jeremy Bishop worked his way through the Biola defense and beat the keeper with a quick shot to tie the match.
Both teams had a chance to put the game away early in the overtime period, but it was Azusa Pacific with was able to find the back of the net first as Jordan Markovich headed in a free kick taken from nearly 40 yards away for the winner. The goal came with 1:42 left in the overtime period.
Biola held a decisive 23-13 edge in shots in the contest and both goalkeepers recorded five saves.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Santa Barbara to take on Westmont College in a GSAC match at 3:00 p.m.
