LOS ANGELES --- For the second-straight match, Biola suffered a narrow 1-0 loss, this time against NCAA Division II Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track on the CSULA Campus.
The Eagles, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Preseason Poll, drop to 0-2-0 to start the season while the Golden Eagles open the year with a 1-0-0 record.
Adam Hughes scored the match's lone goal, receiving a long pass and beating a Biola defender down the right side. He then beat Biola netminder
Aaron Fenlason with a quick shot to his left just under three minutes into the second half.
The Eagles were able to muster just eight shots against the Golden Eagles, though a number of them turned into quality scoring chances. Biola had four consecutive corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the game, but was unable to produce a goal. The Eagles closed out the first half with two great chances from freshman
Daniel Chew, the first of which found him with a wide open shot at an open net. However, his header was a bit mistimed allowing Cal State LA goalie James Irwin to make the save.
Biola's best chance to score came just after the Golden Eagles' goal early in the second half. Off a corner kick, defender
Cody Shelton took a crack at a loose ball, but it rattled off the post and was cleared from danger.
The Eagles look to rebound on Saturday (Sept. 4), traveling to face cross-town foe Whittier College in a non-conference tilt beginning at 11:00 a.m.
