COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola's road luck ran out on Saturday night as the Eagles lost 2-0 at No. 19 Vanguard University in the GSAC Semifinals.
Biola wraps up the 2010 campaign with an 8-10-1 overall record while the Lions improve to 12-7-0 on the season and advance to the GSAC Championship match against Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
The Eagles had a tough task, facing a Vanguard squad they lost to 1-0 just over a week ago. Just as it was in the previous match, Biola outshot the Lions, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Eagles fired 15 shots at the Vanguard goal, putting three on frame.
The Lions got the jump on the Eagles early in the contest, scoring just six minutes into the match. Alejandro Lopez sent a cross into the box from 40 yards out, finding Kevin Cornwall, who chipped past the on-rushing goalkeeper for the opening tally.
Biola kept up the fight and had a number of chances in the first half, though a number of the shots the Eagles got off were off-target. Vanguard kept up its physical play on defense, holding the Eagles speed down. The Lions would commit 26 fouls in the contest to just 11 by Biola.
However, Biola just was not able to break through with the tying tally. In the second half, Vanguard added an insurance goal as William Pellow added a goal in the 68th minute to essentially put the match away.
The victory for the Lions was a bit of revenge after Biola knocked Vanguard out of the GSAC tournament on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals last year.
