LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior
Kennedy Chongo scored in the first half and freshman
Dylan Wingrove added on in the second as Biola recorded a key GSAC victory, beating Concordia University 2-0 on Saturday afternoon on Al Barbour Field.
Biola snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 5-7-1 on the season and moves into fifth-place in the GSAC at 3-3-0. Concordia suffers its fifth loss in its last seven matches, falling to 6-6-1 and to 1-4-1 in conference play.
Biola fought back from a tough road loss on Wednesday with a strong showing in a big victory on Saturday. The home team recorded 12 shots and put five on frame while playing strong defense and holding Concordia to just 10 shots, four on goal.
Chongo opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Freshman
Daniel Chew sent a great pass to a wide-open Chongo, who had slipped behind the defense and easily touched the ball into the open goal for his fourth tally of the year.
Chew would get the assist later in the match on Biola's second goal, this time making a great run down the left side and sliding a pass through the box right to the feet of Wingrove, who easily touched it into the goal to make it 2-0 in the 65th minute.
Concordia had a few solid chances late in the contest, including a corner kick in 80th minute which resulted in a scramble in the box. However, the visitors were unable to find the back of the net as Biola cleared easily.
Biola improves to 5-1-1 when scoring at least one goal and to 3-2-0 at home. Junior netminder
Aaron Fenlason picked up his fifth shutout of the season in the win.
The victory also gives Biola its first win over Concordia since 2006 and just the second since 2000. CUI had entered the match with an 8-1-2 record against Biola over the last 11 matches.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, making the trek up to Fresno Pacific for a 7:00 p.m. match. The Sunbirds are in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with 15 points.
