BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite playing the final 20-plus minutes down a man, Biola rallied back with a late goal to force overtime, only to see Cal State San Marcos come back with a goal midway through the second overtime to win 3-2 in a non-conference battle on Friday night.
The loss is the Eagles' first of the season as they fall to 7-1-0 on the season. The Cougars improve to 5-5-0 and snap a two-match losing streak.
Biola received a pair of goals from sophomore
Marco Ruvalcaba, his fifth and sixth of the season.
Biola's impressive streak of seven-consecutive shutouts to open the season came to an end early in the first half. Cal State San Marcos' Jordan Shadeed fired a long pass up ahead on a counter, finding Brandon Zuniga, who touched it past the keeper for the first goal of the season against Biola. The goal came in the 12th minute, ending the Eagles scoreless streak at 642 minutes.
It didn't take too long for Biola to surrender its second goal of the season as the Cougars tacked on another goal just over three minutes later. Troy Skomra sent a long throw-in into the box where it appeared goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason was pushed from behind, causing the ball to tip off his fingers and deflect into the goal. However, no call was made and Cal State San Marcos held a 2-0 lead early in the match.
Biola was not able to get much going the rest of the half, managing just one shot over the next 30 minutes and trailing 2-0 at the half.
The Eagles finally were able to get on the board in the 70th minute.
Derek Friehe sent a long pass up ahead to Ruvalcaba, who flew past the defense and beat the keeper with a quick shot to make it 2-1.
However it looked like the Eagles were done for the night as
Tony Montalvo received his second yellow card of the night in the 77th minute, forcing Biola to play down a man the rest of the way.
But the setback did not kill the Eagle spirit and Biola managed to knot the game just six minutes later as Jake Ravenscraft sent a long cross into the box where Ruvalcaba headed it in to knot the game.
Both teams had at least one chance to win the game in regulation, but were unable to convert and the game headed into extra time.
Biola had the lone shot in the first overtime as
Abraham Gomez fired a shot from 15 yards out just high of the net.
In the second overtime, the two teams picked up the pace peppering the goal with a pair of shots each. Biola had a great chance to score in the 104th minute as a long clearance by
Cody Shelton found Ruvalcaba behind the Cougar's defense. However, Ruvalcaba's shot and his chance to record the hat trick beat the keeper but rolled just wide.
On the ensuing possession, Shadeed and Zuniga teamed up again as Shadeed found Zuniga with a long pass which was corralled and sent into the back of the goal by the Cougars' leading scorer for his ninth goal of the season.
Biola held a slight 13-11 shot advantage and, despite the game not being terribly physical, the game featured 60 fouls including 35 on the Eagles.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason saw his winning-streak snapped as he allowed three goals in the match. He kept the Eagles in the match with a pair of saves and stopped a number of scoring chances by coming off his line to intercept crosses in the box.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 6), traveling to Westmont for a GSAC match beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Santa Barbara.
