Biola Sweeps Hope to Wrap Up Regular Season

Keena Levert paced Biola with a 4-for-4 afternoon

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Keena Levert went 4-for-4 as Biola closed out the regular season and likely clinched a regional playoff berth with a sweep over Hope International in a GSAC doubleheader, winning by scores of 6-2 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Freedom Field.

The Eagles close out the regular season at 25-23 and finish tied for third with an 11-13 GSAC record. The Royals wrap up the season at 19-29 and 5-19 in conference.

Biola pounded out 18 hits in the doubleheader with Levert leading the way with four hits on the afternoon while freshman Lauren Gandy continued her hot hitting with three hits in seven at bats.

The Eagles scored first in game one, Erica Moyer hit a clutch two-out single to drive home a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. They added another on an RBI-double by Jacqie Hudson in the third to score Gandy and make it 3-0.

Hope got two of those runs back with a two-out rally in the fourth. With one on, Allison Hofstetter and Danielle Marinacci hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it 3-2 in favor of the Eagles.

But Biola got one of those runs back in the fifth as Gandy reached on an infield single, stole second, reached third on a ground out and scored scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Moyer and an error by the Royals.

Biola starter Lyndsie Roberts went four inning, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts, earning the win to move to 11-7 on the season. Emily Gray earned her first save of the year by tossing three shutout innings.

The Eagles again struck first in the second game, again scoring two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. Sarah Smith dropped down a great suicide squeeze to score Krista Johnson with the game's first run and Brittany Bury drove in the second with an RBI-single.

Biola added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, stringing together six straight hits with Smith recording the big blow: a two-RBI single with two outs.

Meanwhile, Biola starter Erica Moyer was tossing a strong game, allowing just two hits over seven shutout innings to improve to 6-8 on the season.

Today's game was also senior day, making the final home games for three Biola players. Gray, who is a junior in eligibility, will be graduating at the end of the season along with seniors Jacqie Hudson and Sarah Jensen.

Biola will have to wait for the official word on its postseason fate, but the Eagles were ranked No. 3 in the regional poll last week. It is likely they will remain in that spot and make their fourth consecutive trip to the NAIA Region II Playoffs and seventh trip in the last nine years.

The NAIA Regional Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 6 and will be hosted by California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif.
