LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola's offense erupted for 15 runs on 25 hits en route to a sweep over Concordia University in a GSAC doubleheader on Tuesday, winning by scores of 7-4 and 8-0 at Freedom Field in La Mirada.
Biola improves to 21-21 overall and 7-11 in GSAC, moving into a tie for fourth in the conference with Vanguard University, which split a twinbill against Azusa Pacific today. Concordia falls to 32-19 on the season and 5-13 in GSAC play.
BU had a strong day at the play, pounding out hit after hit on its way to winning its first doubleheader since the second week of the season.
Biola fell behind early as Ashley Alvarez crushed a solo shot to lead off the game for Concordia. In the bottom of the first, Biola got the run back on an RBI-double by Sarah Jensen to score Lauren Gandy from second.
Biola added another in the second inning as Erica Moyer doubled with two outs and came around to score on an error by Concordia.
Concordia would tie the score at two with an unearned run in the third, but Biola came roaring back with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With one out, Biola strung together six straight singles, the final one being a two-run single by Krista Johnson to cap the scoring.
BU would add another run in the fifth to make it 7-2 as Moyer hit another double and came around to score on a single by Brittany Bury.
Concordia collected two runs in the top of the seventh inning to close the gap to two, but freshman pitcher Lyndsie Roberts wrapped up the game with a strikeout. Roberts earned the win to move to 9-6 on the season, scattering 10 hits but allowing just three earned runs while striking out three.
Biola's 8-9-1-2-3 hitters combined to go 13-for-18 and accounted for all of the scoring in that first game.
Biola quickly got on the board in the second game, taking advantage of an error to score in the bottom of the first.
In the fourth, Biola broke the game open with four runs on five hits. Keena Levert's laser shot down the leftfield line scored Johnson from first base to start things going. After loading the bases, Lyndsie Roberts broke open the game with a two-RBI single to make it 5-0.
Biola would wrap up the game with a three-run fifth inning. With runners at second and third and no one out, Levert drove in the first run with an RBI-groundout. Kacie Lyding then drove in the second with a fielder's choice groundout, then came around to score the game-ending run on a wild pitch.
Meanwhile, junior Emily Gray was shutting down Concordia, allowing just one hit over five innings while striking out five.
Four Biola players finished the day with four hits, led by Moyer, who went 4-for-6. The reigning GSAC Pitcher of the Week proved to have a potent bat as well, recording two doubles and scoring four runs in the two games.
Jensen, Johnson and Gandy also finished the day with four hits, going 4-for-7 in the two games. Gandy, who moved back into the leadoff position on Saturday, was there again today and is now 7-for-11 since moving back into the leadoff spot.
Biola heads to Azusa Pacific on Saturday (Apr. 19) for a GSAC doubleheader beginning at Noon in Azusa.
