Strong Biola Pitching Leads to Split With No. 13 Vanguard

Erica Moyer allowed just four hits over seven shutout innings for the win

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Biola pitchers allowed just one unearned run over 17 innings to force a split with No. 13 Vanguard University in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday, falling 1-0 in eight innings but winning the second game 2-0.

The Eagles are now 19-21 on the season and are 5-11 in GSAC play while the Lions fall to 31-17 and 6-10 in the conference.

Game one was a great pitcher's dual between Biola freshman Lyndsie Roberts and Vanguard senior Jennifer Olivera. The Lions managed just three hits off Roberts while Olivera gave up just two as the two teams were unable to break the ice during the first seven innings of the game.

Biola had the first chance to score in the international-tiebreaker during the eighth inning. Krista Johnson was successfully sacrificed to third with one out, but Olivera was able to strikeout the next two Eagles to end the inning.

The Lions also moved the runner to third with a sacrifice, though the throw to first base was dropped. After a walk loaded the bases, the Eagles were able to get the first out on a comebacker to the pitcher. However, April Glenn was able to knock a single to left to drive in the game-winning run.

Roberts suffered the hard-luck loss and fell to 8-6 on the season. It was the second time this year she has lost a game despite not giving up an earned run.

in the second game, freshman Erica Moyer continued Biola's great pitching by scattering four hits and tossing seven shutout innings. She also struckout five Lions to move to 4-7 on the season.

Moyer and Vanguard pitcher Kelsey Boyer were again locked in a pitchers dual until Biola final broke through with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Jacqie Hudson led off the inning with a single and Johnson then reached on an error by the third baseman. Keena Levert then plated both runners with a double to down the left field line.

Moyer then made it stand up despite getting into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, the Lions were able to get back-to-back singles from their No. 8 and No. 9 hitters. But Moyer was then able to get Sarah Howe to ground out to third to end the game.

Freshman Lauren Gandy finished the day with four hits in six at-bats including going 3-for-4 as the Eagles' leadoff hitter in the second game.

BIola returns home for a GSAC doubleheader against Concordia University on Tuesday (Apr. 15) at 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.
