GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FRESNO, Calif. — Biola's offense took 14 innings to get on the board, but scored nine runs in the final four innings of a GSAC doubleheader at Fresno Pacific and won the second game 9-6 in extra innings after falling 13-0 in the opener on Saturday afternoon in Fresno.
The Eagles improve to 13-7 on the season and 8-6 in conference play while the Sunbirds, who entered ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA poll, move to 12-5 and 8-3 in the GSAC.
Biola capped off a thriller in game two with three runs in the top of the eighth inning after Fresno Pacific tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Kris Cook hit a sacrifice fly to right with the bases-loaded to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning. David West followed that up a batter later with a two-RBI single up the middle to help Biola secure the victory.
After being shutout and held to just four hits in the opener, Biola finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning of the second game on a two-RBI double by Hawkins Gebbers which tied the score at 2-2. Fresno Pacific retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Justin Keeney. However, the Eagles scored three more in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Brent Chavez, then Nick Rotkowitz plated two more with a single to left to put Biola up 5-4.
The Eagles scored what proved to be an important insurance run in the seventh as Matt McQueen singled home Gil Banwart to make it 6-4 Biola, but Keeney hit his second homer of the game–another two-run shot–to tie the game. The Sunbirds followed that shot with back-to-back singles and an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. But Biola pitcher Justin Rodriguez was able to get Joey Norwood to ground into an unconventional 4-8-3 doubleplay to end the threat.
That would set the stage for Biola's three runs in the top of the eighth inning with Rodriguez retiring the side in order in the bottom of the frame to pick up his first win of the year.
The Eagles couldn't seem to get anything going in the opener as they managed just three hits against FPU starter Chris Schwinden. The Sunbirds' hurler went eight innings and struck out 10 on the afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when Rotkowitz and Gebbers hit back-to-back singles with one out.
Things didn't go as well for Biola's No. 1 starter Jimmy Johnson. The senior lefty, who pitched 8-2/3 inning of no-hit ball in his last outing, gave up eight runs on seven hits over four innings and suffered his first loss of the season.
The Eagles hit the road for their next contest, traveling to Westmont for a GSAC contest on Wednesday (Mar. 12) at 3:00 p.m.
