McQueen and Gebbers Blast Three-Run Shots in 7-4 Win over Cal Baptist

Matt McQueen was one of two Eagles with three-run homers

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Hawkins Gebbers and Matt McQueen each crushed three-run home runs and Josh Baas pitched 6-2/3 strong innings to lead Biola to a 7-4 win over Cal Baptist in a GSAC game on Thursday afternoon at Eagles Diamond in La Mirada.

The Eagles improve to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in GSAC play. The Lancers drop to 16-7 and are now 6-6 in the conference.

Biola really needed just two hits to win the game–Gebbers' three-run homer in the third and McQueen blast in the fourth. Brent Opdyke provided the other run with an RBI-single up the middle with one out in the fourth to plate David West, who led off the inning with a double.

While Gebbers and McQueen offered the bulk of the offense, it was great pitching that helped Biola to the win. Baas (3-1) allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out eight over 6-2/3 innings. He gave up just three hits though the first six innings, but got in trouble in the seventh allowing a two-run home run to J.P. LaPointe. A single on the very next pitch ended Baas' day and turned the game over to the Eagles bullpen.

Cal Baptist made the game interesting in the ninth as the Lancers led off the top of the inning with three straight singles against Biola's Steven Alexander. The sophomore then struckout Robert Lundy, who went 4-for-5 against the Eagles when the team met last week, but walked in a run with a free pass to Dominic Zuniga.

The Lancers' Steve Goins then blasted a deep shot to dead centerfield only to see Biola's Chris Foreman make a spectacular catch while crashing into the outfield fence. The long fly simply went down as a sacrifice fly and Alexander then got Brandon Peters to fly out to left to end the game.

McQueen and Gebbers both went 2-for-3 on the day. LaPointe went 2-for-2 on the day for Cal Baptist while Zuniga went 2-for-3.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Mar. 8), traveling to Fresno for a GSAC doubleheader against No. 23 Fresno Pacific University.
