LAKESIDE, Calif. — Biola's offense remained hot, recording 23 runs and 32 hits in a key GSAC doubleheader sweep over San Diego Christian College on Saturday afternoon, winning 14-3 and 9-1 at Stars Field in Lakeside.
The Eagles improve to 22-9 overall on the season with their eighth win in their last nine games. Biola also moves into second place in the GSAC as the second-half of the conference schedule begins with a record of 13-7. The Hawks drop to 13-15 on the season and 8-12 in GSAC play.
The Biola offense remained red-hot, jumping all over San Diego Christian in game one. The Eagles hit four home runs in game one with three accouning for their first seven runs.
Matt McQueen got the Eagles on the board in the second inning with a two-run homer to left. In the third, Kris Cook blasted his team-best fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to put Biola up 5-0. Three batters later Chad Pace greeted SDCC's new pitcher with a two-run homer to left to make it 7-0.
After the Hawks recorded a run in the bottom of the third, Biola came right back with two runs in the fourth. Hawkins Gebbers plated Chris Foreman with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI-single by Cook to make it 9-1.
Junior David West hit the team's fourth and final home run of the game, a one-out solo shot to right in the fifth to put Biola up 10-2. It was his first home run of the season.
San Diego Christian added another run in the bottom of the sixth, but Biola got that run back with a sacrifice fly by Brent Chavez in the top of the eighth. The Eagles added three more in the top of the ninth as Gebbers drove in one with a double followed by two scoring on an SDCC error.
Senior left-handed pitcher Jimmy Johnson continued to pitch well this season, allowing just three runs and scattering 11 hits to pick up the complete-game victory and move to 7-1 on the season.
In the second game, West got the ball rolling with a two-run single in the second inning to put Biola up early. The Eagles would add three more in the third to stretch out the lead thanks to four straight singles to open the frame. Nick Rotkowitz plated Forman with a single up the middle, then scored on a single by Cook. Matt McQueen broke the singles streak, but still plated a run with a sacrifice fly to drive home Gebbers.
SDCC scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Eagles came right back with two in the bottom of the fifth on a Brent Opdyke RBI-single and sacrifice fly by Pace.
West capped the scoring in the top of the sixth with a two-run double to left-center to make it 9-1. West finished the game going 3-for-4 and went 5-for-7 with five RBIs on the day to lead the Biola offense. Cook didn't have too bad a day either, going 5-for-8 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Biola pitcher Josh Baas was impressive in the second game, mowing down the Hawks in his second start of the week. The senior, who defeated Bethany on Monday, allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five to earn the seven-inning, complete game victory. He improves to 6-1 on the season and lowers his team-best ERA to 1.15.
Biola's offense has now combined to score 56 runs on 69 hits in its last four games.
The Eagles were able to exact a measure of revenge on Saturday after they lost their only two games in El Cajon last year. SDCC won by scores of 4-3 and 7-2 near the end of the 2007 season. The two teams split a doubleheader in La Mirada to start the conference schedule in February.
Biola's next game comes on Wednesday (Apr. 2) at home against GSAC foe Vanguard University at 3:00 p.m.
