Biola Splits GSAC-Opening Series With San Diego Christian

Jimmy Johnson pitched well to earn his second win of the season

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Senior Jimmy Johnson allowed just one run on seven hits while the offense used a nine-run second inning to win 10-1 in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 5-2 in the opener to San Diego Christian College in the GSAC openers for both teams Saturday.

The Eagles improve their record to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in GSAC play while the Hawks go to 5-1 and 1-1 in conference.

Johnson (2-0) had another strong outing for the Eagles, allowing just seven hits and one run over seven innings for the win. He was helped out by Biola offense which scored 10 runs on nine hits.

The Eagles did the majority of their damage in the second inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs on just six hits while taking advantage of three SDCC errors. Freshman Nick Rotkowitz broke the game open with a bases-loaded single which–following a pair of errors on the Hawks' left fielder–allowed a third run to score to give Biola a 5-0 lead.

After the inning was extended on another error, Biola capped the scoring on an RBI single by Brent Chavez.

The Eagles scored one final run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Brent Updyke doubled to lead off the inning, then scored on a ground out by Chad Pace.

Biola's offense struggled in the first game as San Diego Christian's Lance Janke threw a complete game, allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out five.

The Eagles were able to get on the board first as Janke was a bit wild in the first inning. He hit three batters in the first frame alone with Chris Foreman scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kris Cook.

Biola's starting pitcher Derek Dietzen opened the game by retiring the first 10 batters, but the Hawks were ale to scored a run on three hits to tie the game in the fourth. They then chased Dietzen with five hits in six at bats to start the fifth an scoring three times. Senior Josh Baas came in and stopped the bleeding, allowing just one hit over the next 3-1/3 inning.

However, Biola was unable to get much going offensively against Janke, as he retired 10-straight batters from the fifth through eighth innings to hold on for the win.

The Eagles ramin home for their next contest, hosting NAIA Region II foe Cal State San Marcos in a single, non-conference game at Eagles Diamond on Tuesday (Feb. 12) at 2:00 p.m.
