RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal Baptist pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of three costly Biola errors en route to an 8-3 win in a GSAC game Wednesday afternoon at Totman Stadium in Riverside.
The Eagles fall to 9-6 with the loss and drop to 4-5 in GSAC play. The Lancers stay a perfect 13-0 at their new ballpark and move to 15-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
Biola pitcher Brian Albert (1-3) was roughed up a bit, allowing 15 hits but just five earned runs over 7-2/3 innings. However, for the third time in four starts, the Eagles failed to give him much run support as four Cal Baptist pitchers combined to allowed just three runs. Chilly Ronquillo (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Lancers.
Cal Baptist jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring an unearned run in the first inning, then adding three in the second, though just two were earned.
Biola responded with a run in the top of the third as David West opened the frame with a double down the right-field line, then scored on an RBI-groundout by Nick Rotkowitz.
The Lancers came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Robert Lundy–who was 4-for-5 on the night–led things off with a double to right, then scored on a single by Steve Goins.
Biola closed the gap to 6-2 in the top of the sixth inning on a Matt McQueen solo home run to left. But Cal Baptist came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to keep the lead at five runs.
The Eagles got what proved to be the final run of the game in the top of the eighth as Chris Foreman drove home Brent Chavez with a single up the middle.
The Lancers capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the inning as Goins drove in Lundy with a single up the middle.
Lundy finished with four hits to pace the offense while Goins went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Four Biola players had two hits each including Foreman, who also had an RBI.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday (Mar. 1) hosting a GSAC doubleheader against Concordia University beginning at 11:00 a.m.
