GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Junior Chris Foreman's straight steal of home with two outs in the top of the eighth led Biola to a 2-1 win over The Master's College in game one of a GSAC doubleheader in Santa Clarita on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (9-5, 4-4 GSAC) dropped the second game of the twinbill to the Mustangs (12-2, 5-2 GSAC) by a score of 9-3.
Senior pitcher Jimmy Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out 11 to pick up the win for Biola in game one. He improves to 4-0 on the season with the victory.
The Eagles struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Foreman reached on an error to open the game, then Nick Rotkowitz was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no one out. Hawkins Gebbers' sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a bunt single to load the bases. Kris Cook then hit into a double play to knock in the first run.
The Master's tied the score in the sixth as Steve Shaver's sacrifice fly drove home Ben Ives.
But Foreman stole the show in the top of the eighth as he was hit by a pitch to lead of the inning, stole second with one out and reached third on a fly out. He then caught TMC starter Timothy Woodward in a slow windup and took off for home. Woodward was rattled by the steal attempt and bounced the ball to the plate allowing Foreman to score the go-ahead run.
Johnson then took care of the rest, allowing just one runner to reach on an error in the final two innings to secure the win.
Biola got off to another strong start in the second game, scoring unearned runs in the second and the third to go up 2-0 early. Cook scored the Eagles' first run, as he came around on a error by The Master's shortstop. In the third, Daniel Bodemer opened the inning by reaching on another error by the shortstop, then scored on a passed ball.
However, the wheels came off for the Eagles in the fourth as five walks and a hit batter opened the door for an eight-run inning for The Master's. Wesley Shryock had the big blow with a bases-clearing double to make it 4-2. That was followed later in the inning by a two-run single by Tyler Diamond to cap the scoring. After The Master's added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, Brent Opdyke plated Gebbers in the top of the sixth to make it 9-3.
Junior Charlie Gausepohl suffered the loss for the Eagles to drop to 0-1 on the season. Joseph Zeller ran his record to 5-0 with the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits over six innings while striking out seven.
Gebbers finished the doubleheader going 5-for-7 to lead the Eagles offense. He had three hits in four at-bats in the first game and went 2-for-3 in the second.
Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 27), traveling to Riverside to face #15 Cal Baptist in a single GSAC game at 2:00 p.m.
