Emily Gray pitched well to earn the win in game one

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

BELMONT, Calif. — Biola wrapped up a brief trip to the Bay area with a doubleheader split at NCAA Division II Notre Dame de Namur University, winning the opener 2-1 in nine innings before dropping the nightcap 4-3 on Tuesday at Notre Dame High School in Belmont.

The Eagles are now 4-4 on the season and wrap up their trip with a 1-3 record. The Argos improve to 6-7 overall with the split.

Senior pitcher Emily Gray (2-1) was outstanding in the circle for Biola in game one, allowing just one unearned run on four hits over nine innings while striking out seven and walking three.

The two teams were unable to score through the game's first seven innings and went to the international tiebreaker to start the eighth. Biola got on the board first as Sara Smith drove home Lauren Gandy with a groundout in the top of the eighth.

Notre Dame answered with a two-out single to drive home a run in the bottom of the frame, but he Eagles were again able to score in the top of the ninth. This time, it was Erin DaSilva driving home Krista Johnson with her second hit of the game.

In the bottom of the inning, the Argos runner reached third with one out after a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded as Gray coaxed infield popouts out of the next two batters to end the game.

The Eagles got on the board first again in the second game, plating two in the top of the fifth inning. In the frame, Johnson drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single by Jacqie Hudson. Smith then sacrificed them to second and third, with DaSilva driving home Johnson with a single. Hudson came around to score on a fielders choice hit by Kacie Lyding as the Eagles went up 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Biola added another run as pinch-hitter Kristin Larson hit a sacrifice fly to score pitcher Erica Moyer.

Moyer (0-1) had been cruising up to that point, allowing no runs on three hits over the first five inning and quickly retired the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, Tara Van Meter hit a single, then scored on a triple by Danielle Holt. That was followed by a double off the bat of Bryanne Norris to score Holt and pull NDNU within one at 3-2.

After the Eagles went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, the Argos took advantage of a Biola error to extend the inning and put to runners on base with two out. Lindsay Crist then ended the game by scoring both runners with a double to give the Argos a 4-3, walk-off victory.

Biola returns home next week for a non-conference game against Holy Names University on Wednesday, Feb. 27, beginning at Noon.
